Road Accident: A Moment of Carelessness Can Change a Life Forever

Today, I witnessed one of the most terrifying incidents of my life. On my way home from the office this evening, I came face-to-face with the reality of how uncertain life truly is. No one knows when danger will strike — only Allah knows what awaits us. Leaving home safely in the morning no longer guarantees that we will return safely at night.

It happened on a busy street in Fatullah. I was trying to cross the road when suddenly a truck came rushing toward me at high speed. For a brief moment, I thought this might be the end — I could literally see death approaching. But by Allah’s mercy, I stepped back just in time, and the truck missed me by only a few inches. My heart was pounding, hands were trembling, and I could feel how fragile life really is.

After catching my breath, I started walking again. Just a few minutes later, I noticed a crowd gathered a short distance ahead. As I approached, I saw that the same truck had collided with a motorcycle. Fortunately, the motorcycle wasn’t speeding, so the rider wasn’t seriously injured — just shaken and scared. However, the bystanders were furious. They pulled the truck driver out and began scolding him. Some shouted, “How do these drivers even get licenses to drive on the road?”

Standing there, I couldn’t help but think — what if it had been me under that truck? Just a few minutes and I could’ve been the one lying on the road. The scene reminded me of how unpredictable life is. Death walks beside us every day, and we hardly even notice it.

Every day in Bangladesh, dozens of road accidents occur, claiming lives or leaving people permanently disabled. Roads have turned into racing grounds where buses, trucks, and motorcycles compete to overtake one another. Behind this reckless competition lie countless broken families, crying parents, and children who have lost their loved ones forever.

One major cause of such tragedies is the lack of proper training among many drivers. Some drive for long hours without rest, leading to fatigue and poor concentration. Others, shockingly, drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs — putting everyone’s life at risk.

After today’s experience, I realized that road safety isn’t just about careful driving; it’s also about personal awareness. Whether you’re a driver or a pedestrian, even a split second of distraction can cost a life. Crossing the road or walking beside traffic requires full attention — because accidents happen in the blink of an eye.

We all have a role to play. The government and traffic authorities must strictly enforce safety laws, but individual responsibility is equally important. Drivers must respect speed limits, and pedestrians should be cautious and patient.

By the grace of Allah, I was saved today. But not everyone is that fortunate. Every day, someone somewhere loses their life in a similar way. So from now on, I’ll remind myself every time I step out. Reaching the destination is important — but reaching alive is far more important.
