Instinct is what guides us when we don’t know the rules, but to understand what instinct is, is complicated. If we only follow the definition of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language, it does not make it very clear to us either.

INSTINCT
From lat. instinctus 'impulse', 'inspiration'.

  1. m. Set of reaction patterns that, in animals, contribute to the conservation of the life of the individual and the species. Reproductive instinct.
  2. m. Mobile attributed to an act, feeling, etc., that obeys a deep reason, without being aware of it who does it or feels it.
  3. m. Faculty that allows to value or appreciate certain things. It has pictorial instinct.
  4. m. Rel. P. us Impulse or divine movement, referred to supernatural inspirations.
  5. 5m. Instigation or suggestion.

Today we will remain with the first definition and to narrow it a little more, we will close the range and speak of those which are not learned, but innate.

(* lat. Instinctus *.) Form of psychic activity, type of behavior. In a broad sense, instinct is opposed to consciousness. The instinctive type of behavior is typical of animals and is based on the biological forms of existence that arise in the process of adaptation to the environment. On the contrary, conscious behavior is expressed in the persevering change of nature by man and is organized on the basis of knowledge of the regularities of nature. In a more specific sense, the instinct is the behavior consolidated by the biological inheritance, typical of the given species of animals.

According to I. Pávlov, instinct is a chain of unconditioned reflexes. Instinct manifests itself to a greater degree in relatively unorganized animals (insects, fish, birds). As evolution progresses, it becomes increasingly important to reflect complex activity based on individual experience.

Instincts are also inherent to man. However, they do not play a decisive role, since specifically human activity arises and develops as a result of socio-historical processes and is stimulated mainly not by biological reasons, but by social ones.

Freud uses the terms "instinkt" and "trieb", terms that many authors translate as "instinct". However, they do not mean exactly the same. When Freud speaks of "instinkt" ("instinct") he is referring to the instincts in the ordinary sense, that is, to the innate and specific appetites or common to all individuals of a species; On the other hand, when he uses the term "trieb" (which can be translated as "drive" or "impulse"), he does so to refer to the force that pushes the subject -including the individual character appetites of each subject- towards a person, representation or object.

In his theory of instinct, Freud first proposed the existence of two groups, the ego instincts or conservation instincts and the sexual instincts or libido; later he considered that the conservation instincts are the expression of the libido towards the individual, so that only the libido would exist as a basic instinct. Finally, since 1920, he modified his theory again proposing the life instincts (Eros) and death instincts (Thanatos) as the basic instincts of the human psyche.

The truth is that instinct is what has led to the survival of our species, as well as technological advances, since the survival instinct of the species has led to the investigation of climatic elements and discover the importance of hygiene.

Biology governs our instincts, hormones and chemistry in general drives us to reactions or sensations that, even under observation, we can define if an individual is chemically balanced. For example, if a person attempts against his own life, we can ensure that his brain chemistry is not balanced and is a victim of what we call depression.

Now, if we unite instinct and wisdom we come not only to evolution as a species, but to social evolution. Through the centuries we have learned which behaviors are favorable for the species and which are not, for example, Johann Gottfried Herder in his book Anthropology and History, the instinct of communication that is none other than self-preservation in conjunction with a community .

In our Volume number 20 we review our instinct for conservation, communication and others in Cervantes. Welcome then to our festival of:

Hello, Steemit community! Instincts are reactions that can help in our favor when we are in situations of danger, pressure or despair. Although people want to separate this topic because we are "civilized", something we can not deny is that in the end we are animals and however intelligent or reasonable we may be, we sometimes succumb to our animal side and in the case of Pro - Gamers this can be used in their favor to perform unthinkable and legendary actions.

The social instinct of men is not based on the love of society, but on the fear of loneliness.
(Arthur Schopenhauer)

Recognizing our instincts can lead us to tell great stories, from how to go against them, to how to find them. Beautiful songs, funny videos. Instinct is universal and regardless of the piece of land where we are, we will continue to recognize and empathize with whoever expresses it.

I believe instinct is a more deeper, refined knowing that is not well understood, no, not by science or psychology. It seems to me that there is a part of us that could know all things in their purest form but is not readily expressed except it gets pretty extreme, where little tiny decisions cannot but be the right one and at the right time. We ought therefore to harness this internal power of knowing everyday. It is perhapscthe most under harnessed source of inborn knowledge I know of but look, it can save us a whole lot if we learn to fall back to it every so often.

Instinct - human instinct - is very powerful.

long but interesting

Instinct is really difficult to define. However we sometimes in life act with instinct and which in a way can benefit us. Thank for such a lengthy post. It really proves the wealth of your research.
