How to identify the vocal range? (Tutorial)

Hello, Steemians! Happy Tuesday! :D

Today I want to talk to you a little bit about vocal range. This is important because if you determine what is your range, you will be able to choose precisely the songs that are most appropriate for you and you will sing much better.

What is vocal range?

In case you didn't know it, the vocal range are all the notes a person can emit from the lowest to the highest.

Men and women have different vocal registers and this is their classification:

Women:

  • Soprano: It is the highest female voice and is between the notes C4 and C6.

Famous soprano singers: Hayley Williams, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey.

  • Mezzo-soprano: The voice has a medium range and is located between the soprano and the contralto. The mezzo-soprano is between A3 and A5.

Famous mezzo-soprano singers: Beyonce, Sia, Madonna.

  • Contralto: These are very rare female voices because they are in a very low musical tessitura. This ranges from G3 to F5.

Famous Contralto singers: Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill.

Men:

  • Tenor: They are the highest male voices in a range from D3 to A4.

Famous tenor singers: Luciano Pavarotti, Stevie Wonder, Bruno Mars.

  • Baritone: It is the most common type of male voice and is found between the bass and the tenor. His register is between G2 to E4.

Famous baritone singers: Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Freddie Mercury.

  • Bass: The lowest voice of a man between E2 and E4.

Famous bass singers: Barry White, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash.

The numbers next to the notes indicate the location of the octave (C- D- E- F- G- A- B- C) on the piano. This musical instrument makes up 7 octaves, so if someone tell you, for example, to find the 4th octave, this it will be in the middle of the keyboard.

How can you identify your vocal range?

Identifying your vocal range is simple, you just need to have a piano or keyboard. If you don't have any, I invite you to download the App Perfect Piano or if not, you can go from your PC to the page Virtual Piano.

Once you are in front of the piano, find the central C (C4) and then you will begin to play the low notes while you sing them with the word "LAM", until you reach your limit (you will write down that limit). Then you're gonna do the same thing, but with the high notes.

When you are searching for your register it is important that you know that the limit is the last 2 notes (high and low) that you can sing without forcing the voice.

Once you have your voice range written down, you will go to the vocal classification and compare it to the registers that appear there.

That's all there is to it! Did you see how easy it is? :D

If you found your vocal range within the classification, would you tell me what kind of register you have? :D

I hope you found this post useful, don't forget to give me a vote. :D

I send you a big hug! ❤

Great voices you all have.

Thank you! I follow you 😄❤

That's amazingly well explained and interesting :) I could never distinguish the different vocal ranges... Now, it all makes sense :)

I'm glad I cleared up your doubt. Thank you very much! ❤😄

I learned about my vocal range when I joined my primary school's choir group. I am an alto. :-)
A lot of people don't know their vocal range so they tend to not hitting the right note of the song.

Hello! That's right, and they can injure their vocal cords. I am also an alto :).
