In China it's a bit different than in most countries, because the biggest barrier is the language of course. When I tried to find an apartment, I realized that owners don't speak English and they are afraid of renting apartment to non-Chinese citizens, who don't even speak their language, just because they are afraid of misunderstandings and also because they probably have never rented an apartment to foreigners. That's why it's a lot easier if you have a Chinese friend who can go with you and discuss everything or you can decide to just learn Chinese :)
