WALKING IN HIM

6 AS YOU THEREFORE HAVE RECEIVED CHRIST JESUS THE LORD, SO WALK IN HIM,
7 ROOTED AND BUILT UP IN HIM AND ESTABLISHED IN THE FAITH, AS YOU HAVE BEEN TAUGHT, ABOUNDING IN IT WITH THANKSGIVING."
Colossians 2:6-10 (NKJV)

Believers are admonished in our text to walk in Christ Jesus, since they had received Him as Lord and Saviour (Colossians 2:6). To walk in Christ simply means to live by His Word or teaching, having your life directed and guided by His principles. This walking in Christ is the core of the Christian faith. Walking in Christ Jesus in addition does mean having a communion or fellowship with God the Father.

It has never been God's plan that those who professed Christ Jesus as their Saviour and Lord should live independently of Him, God. It is always a tug of war or a battle for supremacy between the walking in the flesh [being obedient to human nature or responding or reacting to things generally according to the impulses of human nature] and the walking in the spirit [being obedient to the stirring of the Holy Spirit on the inside of your recreated human spirit as a believer] (Galatians 5:16,17).

The flesh or the human nature would always be demanding for your attention or obedience to its inclinations. There are humans who could not or are not willing to deny the flesh, the human nature. Such people, both the unbelievers and carnal believers, would want you to join them in whatever they are doing—in their rebellion against God's express commands in His Word (1 Peter 4:1-4).

This is where walking in Christ Jesus is a bit difficult. This is where the real battle of Christian life is, the battle you confront as a result of the decision you made to wholeheartedly follow God, Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:12). The flesh and the world would want to frustrate you in your resolve to follow and serve God wholeheartedly (Psalm 34:19). This and a number of other reasons why God gave the Holy Spirit to you and I, the believers in Christ, to be our companion in this heavenly race or journey (John 14:16-18).

Walking in Christ could be demanding, straining or stressful or burdensome, because of challenges on the way (Matthew 7:14). Those believers who could not endure have decided to pitch their tent with the world, compromising their faith, mixing their Christian faith or life with the worldly principles because they wanted to be acceptable to the world (Galatians 1:10). They do believe or want to believe that God's commands are too stringent and difficult to abide with.
One important and major thing that a believer would need to know about walking with God is to recognize or know believers' real enemies, the ones that would not want or allow you to get to the end of your race and finish well—these enemies are the flesh, the world, and the devil!

a. The flesh is the old adamic nature that would keep pressing you to go back and continue what you used to do before you came to Christ Jesus, things that relished the flesh. A lot of believers are having it tough in this area, including any number of ministers—they are still struggling in the keeping of their flesh in check. It has been difficult for them to control or mortify or discipline their flesh, the human nature (Colossians 3:5,6). This is where your attention should be focused, to mortify or overcome the flesh, for you to be able to walk in the the Lord as you ought—as a true child of His.
b. The world are the alluring things of the world that are around you, beckoning to you to come and be part of the system of the world (1 John 2:15-17).
c. The devil is the adversary of believers, watching your carelessness (1 Peter 5:8), and accusing you to God day and night (Revelation 12:9,10) and at the same time assigning demons through human agents to frustrate you in your bid to move higher in the things of the spirit.

In summation, to walk in the Lord or Christ means to walk in His precepts or commands. Those who do that are the ones who actually love Him and they are His friends:

“IF YOU LOVE ME [Jesus], KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS."
John 14:15 (NKJV)

"YOU ARE MY FRIENDS IF YOU DO WHATEVER I COMMAND YOU."
John 15:14 (NKJV)

Peace.
