I don't know about that; I was somewhat young when I had this experience, so I might have totally missed that part. But that does sound pretty racist to me! Traditions have a way of being very outdated, but still get accepted by people because we've been doing it for such a long time. There are so many traditions that are not in line with the modern views of equality among different races, genders etc.

Here's a story about it, apparently it was a traditional parade they put on in Madrid but now they've stopped it.
