What happens when you choose to tell an entire life through a single day? In "Dieci Capodanni", the real protagonist is time: every episode becomes a fragment, every encounter a chance to choose differently, every New Year a fresh beginning.

Ana and Oscar meet in the same place on New Year’s Eve in 2015. She is working behind the counter, trying to manage excited customers and the usual end-of-year chaos, while he is going through a rough period with his ex-girlfriend, whom he has chosen to follow anyway, despite their relationship clearly being over for quite some time.

A few hours later, they both end up in a pub to celebrate their birthdays. They have just turned 30 — Oscar on December 31st and Ana on January 1st — although their moods could not be more different.

Ana, naturally outgoing, notices Oscar looking sad and dejected at the counter and, before heading off to a party at a friend’s house, offers him a cocktail. It is their first interaction, the starting point of a love story destined to unfold over the next ten years.

The Spanish TV series "Dieci Capodanni" shows, across ten episodes, the development of the protagonists’ lives. So far, it may seem fairly conventional, but as hinted by the title, there is a narrative twist: each episode focuses exclusively on the events of January 1st of each year, leaving viewers to infer everything that happened in between.

A device already seen in the novel "One Day" by David Nicholls, later adapted into a film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, as well as a recent Netflix series: a single day of the year becomes a snapshot of the story, around which the entire plot revolves, allowing the audience to witness the evolution of both events and characters.

In the opening episode of "Dieci Capodanni", after sharing a drink at the bar, the two protagonists get into the same car heading to a party. At dawn, among people sleeping or overwhelmed by the excesses of the night before, they begin talking and decide to set off together — along with a friend of hers and his partner — towards Valencia.

Their travel companions soon get into a heated argument, repeatedly risking an accident, so Ana and Oscar decide to get out as quickly as possible to avoid worse consequences. They end the day in intimacy at his home, spend the night together, falling asleep tenderly in each other’s arms, but say goodbye the next day due to an unexpected event: his ex has had an accident, and he, being a doctor, rushes to assist her.

In the following episode, the two appear again in the opening scenes, joking and talking in the kitchen on New Year’s Eve. They are preparing dinner, and the audience is shown how their relationship has grown over the year, but…

Plot twist: they have remained just friends. Oscar has gotten back together with his ex-girlfriend, but Ana has carved out an important place in his life, becoming part of his inner circle. Meanwhile, she too has a new partner, whom she introduces to the group during the evening.

The dinner is lively, and things take a particularly interesting turn during a game, when questions directed at Ana and Oscar reveal that a certain chemistry had developed between them in the past — something that has not entirely disappeared, despite their current relationships.
