Mars, The Bringer Of War, Gustav Holst
Devastation and Chaos
Devastation and Chaos, two descriptive words to explain Gustav Holst's amazing introduction into his suite called The Planets. When created Gustav perceived these pieces as life in it's confusing and unconventional pattern. Mars being the disastrous beginning and the next part of the suite named Venus, The Bringer Of Peace represented life slowing down and beginning to better, the next planets would continue this pattern representing next stages of life as well. This suite made a huge change in what would be thought as epic and classical music at the time. Some would even say it's the most devastating piece of music ever created!
When I listened to this piece of music for the first time it changed everything I thought music was at the time of Gustav Holst. At first It made me crazy to think such a power driven song could have been composed around 1914-1916. It would have been amazing to see such a piece of music at the time since there were no recordings of music to be heard of and listening to music could be very expensive at the time so hearing this would have been a rare opportunity making your first experience of The Planets baffling and fulfilling.
The impact of Gustav Holst's Mars was so big it's still impacting todays music and movies! It goes so far as to an entire redone heavy metal cover of The Bringer Of War( Link for it is at the bottom). I would like to make a series of these posts about the Planets Suite so be expecting some more in the coming days.
