The Old Dog Asks: Is The Steem Blockchain Enviromentally Friendly? Contest Winners!
I would love to see thousands of Steem blockchain users clean up litter using the hashtag "cleanplanet"! Imagine the good that it would do for the environment and for the reputation of Steem!
Last week I posted a challenge for more Steemers to get involved in this environmentally friendly posting activity.

I offered a 2 Steem prize to each of the first 10 Steemers to pick up trash and make a post according to the requirements listed at @cleanplanet. Three members responded and I'm sending them each 2 Steem for a total of 6 Steem.

As @cleanplanet builds their SP they will be able to give out higher rewards to cleanplanet posters and hopefully we can start to see this project go viral!
They've got a web site at cleanplanet.io which explains what this project is all about.
Their account is looking better all the time but it would be great to see more SP delegated to them.

It's simple. All you have to do is:
- Document with videos or pictures you or your friends cleaning up litter and putting it in the trash
- Make a post about it on the Steem blockchain and use #cleanplanet as one of the tags.
- Get rewarded!

Thank you so much Old Dog. I am planning to do a weekly clean, at least for a while and see how it goes. You know I host a few tags that have become rather large. I am hoping to do the same for Clean Planet. I am going to try and get #trashthursday off the ground. Just know I always appreciate you and all that you do for the community!

Well, of course, you do! Well, I will do my best as we just did the spring into action clean up before the post. I didn't think about making a post for it, but I am pretty sure if I try really hard, I can find more trash, somewhere!

For Mother Earth? Anytime.
Oops! Reading the title I was expecting something quite different. What came to my mind was how EOS network inspired all their top 21 Block Producers to go carbon neutral and I was expecting something similar with Steem Witnesses.
But this is something bigger! CleanPlanet is about cleaning of whole planet and not just Steem chain. Just awesome!
It's a worthwhile question, though, and one that's hard to answer. Just how much energy is used by the blockchain? I've worked with some rough numbers and guesstimated, but never had any thorough answers. And there was (or is coming?) A change that will lower witness costs, presumably lowering energy requirements?
This is true. It will move fro high RAM storage to cheaper hard drive storage I believe.
In any case POS is uses much less energy than POW.
Absolutely. My father's issue with it, though, is he's trying to figure out if it's more efficient than Facebook.

I already participate in this action and also believe that we need to carry out such actions as much as possible since I saw with my own eyes a huge amount of garbage and was horrified when I collected it. Thank you for one more motivation to the action of cleaning the planet
