A springtime favorite, the daffodil - also called jonquil or narcissus, comes in a fabulous array of colors (with petals - the "corolla" - from clear white, through the classic buttery yellow, to orange, and the central disk - the "corona" - from matching to contrasting orange, red, yellow, pink, or white), sizes, and shapes. As a modest example, the daffodils pictured here have similar-colored coronas, but in the flowers with white petals they are much flatter, or disc-shaped, and in the yellow-petaled flowers, they are more tubular or cup-like. This is just the tip of the iceberg, though. Check out this article for more details about the incredible variety of daffodil sizes, shapes, and colors: http://thedaffodilsociety.com/wordpress/a-guide-to-dafodils/classification-system/

Fun fact: The genus name, Narcissus, refers to the beautiful youth of that name in Greek myth, who fell in love with his reflection in a woodland pool. So entranced was he that he wasted away gazing at it. After he died, his body was replaced by nodding yellow flowers, continuing to bend over their reflection in the pool: the narcissus.
