Deployment Updates, Improved Power Downs, New Landing Page Copy

in #condenser7 years ago (edited)

In today’s post we’d like to update the community on some of the notable recent deployments made to “condenser” the software behind Steemit.

We are all sad to see it go, but “Welcome to the Blockchain” has been replaced. New users who land on steemit.com will now see “Money talks. Your voice is worth something. Join the community that pays you to post and curate high quality content.”

Improved Power Downs

Steemit.com now allows users to power down less than 100% of their SP. When a user clicks on the “Power Down” button in their wallet, they will be taken to a page where they can select how much of their SP they want to power down. It will provide an estimate of how much STEEM will be disbursed each week.

If the power down will leave less than 5 SP in the account, it will give the user a warning:

Additional Changes

These changes were deployed along with several other enhancements.

Pull Request 1699
A Russian translation file was loaded into condenser in preparation for supporting multiple languages via translations.

Pull Request 1686
Users can now use the middle click on a username and it will take them directly to the user’s blog page:

Left click will continue to open the same user preview page as before:

Pull Request 1695
Additional clarification was added to the user signup process.

Pull Request 1667 and Pull Request 1673
Updates were made to the Welcome page and FAQ.

Pull Request 1732
Streamlined a portion of the new user signup process that was causing delays for some users.

Other Miscellaneous Changes

  • 1055 post cross link #1077
  • fix percent interpolation issue #1690
  • 1153 kill nested steemit proxy urls #1701
  • 1417 retain image proxy url sizing #1723
  • konami-code #1715

Thx. Little things make a difference.
I value about steemit that I can use it on pc, phone and tablet. I don’t want different ui’s on different devices. I’m writing this on an iPad right now. Simple UIs are powerful.

I think the biggest thing that needs to be changed is the display of content. Content needs to have a longer life, I miss so much from people I follow while I get spammed at the same time.

I look forward to all the future changes that are coming.

I appreciate your hard work...I do have one suggestion that I think you can consider on the main page.....instead of "Money Talks" you can put:

"Mine Steem With Your Mind"

This sounds much more alluring and mysterious.....
I don't know, take a poll, one poll on here, and one on Twitter....let the Steemians decide...

Otherwise, I am happy about your continued hard work. Thank you.

at the @steemitblog headquarters right now:
"money talks (bitches)!"

Yes if there could be some way to stress how vital people's consciousnesses are in the process, that would be wonderful. That's one of the most powerful aspects of the platform!

I became aware of people loving the idea of "mining steem with our minds" from reading people's replies to my post about it. It's a powerful idea.

That is a very cool thought! 'Mining with your mind', because it's creativity that fuels this platform. Steem is the place to be when quality content is kind of your thing, but it has so many facets and features. Summing all that up in one short slogan is a daunting challenge, however I still think that although the current one is good, there's always a better slogan

Very powerful, but maybe hard for first time site visitors to grasp. Most have probably never even heard of mining.

Yeah! Money Talks - Build your Bots. ¡Doesn't cut the mustard here for a newer landing page!

"Mine Steem With Your Mind" ...until..

Earth Landing

Definitely looks more appropiate. Sure! click on the image to read more about this issue. }:)

I love this slogan - it's close to what I have said in a cn post. Steem is an idea platform, not just a blogging platform.

I have no problem with "Money talks." well, because it does...

People coming to this site will notice the dollar amounts beside posts quickly and will naturally want to know why there is money beside posts. And it's explained further "Your voice is worth something. Join the community that pays you to post and curate high quality content." It couldn't be any clearer.

The people who get paid are the ones who:

  1. Write high quality content (those with the voice mentioned above)
  2. Curate high quality content (those who "voice" their opinion on which content they think is valuable and how much); this can also include creating and maintaining communities in the future
  • and those who just come to read, get to read high quality content free from ads (which means a very good reading experience) all for free.

  • as for newbies not making much money when they start out: that's a problem with the fundamentals of content discovery with the current tag-based organization. Right now, it's hard to find content to read, but when communities are implemented, content will be so much more visible. For example, a newbie can make a post into a highly active community with thousands of followers and all those people will see it. He or she doesn't have to build a following on their blog, it's already there. Or they can start their own communities.

another thing

No offence to anyone, but I don't think saying "Mine STEEM with your mind" will work well, because the concept of mining is know within crypto circles by people familiar with cryptocurrencies. I don't think ordinary writers, readers etc will be attracted to the term or understand the purpose of Steemit on first glance. Steemit needs to go mainstream and we need to simplify our message.

Money Talks is great SWEEEEET

I'm no exper but this sure seems to be setting the stage for something very big. Thanks for the improved power down... but I think I will be powering up as much as I can. Can't wait to see what this leads to!

Thank you, @steemitblog for the update.

1- The new slogan "Money Talks" is worth a #discussion. I have just posted a new article for that. Please join the discussion there.

2- I loved the power-down feature. This was very much needed. I have also noticed that it solves another problem: Powering down while delegating SP. Before this update, you could not power down if you had delegated some SP. Now you can.

I hope you continue rolling-out more updates.

Oh, and be sure to vote for my owner, @netuoso, as Steem Witness

Have a great day!

Great job on the improvements! The partial power down feature will really be nice. I have already been seeing some users in the community working on translations for the Bluepaper, which is really cool :)

RIP 'Welcome to the blockchain'.

LOL.

Even classics have their day

Hahahahaha! I am a little sad also.

Money Talks

really? Suggesting new users they can earn something, completely ignoring the real advantages?

Is steemit, Inc. out of money, or why are they not able to hire 1 decent marketer?

There are a lot of aspects to the platform, and I'm sure it is difficult to capture the essence of the entire platform in a quick catchy slogan. The reality is that money is one of the big reasons that people join. After they are here, hopefully they find that the platform offers so much more.

Also, just to point out - the fact that your comment is now sitting as the top comment on the post after you received an upvote with more stake than all the other comments goes to show that money does play a big role in the conversations that we have here. IDK if it is that far off the mark..

Sure many users found Steemit when seeking info about making money, or crypto, or even BTC, but after a while it becomes about much more than that...I'm not saying the rewards aren't necessary of course they are, thats what makes Steemit so different to the other Socmed Facebook, Twitter, Instagram who give you nothing for being involved in their money making completely self centered platforms that are filled with ads and stealing every bit of data about us they can to make THEM even more $$, while giving back nothing to those who actually create the wealth for them. I think they need to focus more on the social aspect with real rewards for being involved as a secondary aspect with the option to invest real money to fast track your reward potential.(reality?).

How do you condense that down into a catchy slogan?

(:D my 3cents worth, being Frank)

MORE FRIENDS MORE REWARDS MORE FUN!!!

MORE SOCIAL MORE FOLLOWERS MORE FUN!!!

MORE UPVOTES MORE FRIENDS MORE REWARDS!!!

Interesting :)

money is probably the only reason steem is still somewhat relevant.

however, advertising this aspect only lead to disappointed newbies, they will never earn a single cent without investing. yes, there are some exemptions, but the majority won't earn.

further, this will only encourage even more bots, and they're a already a huge pest.

It is not really saying "join and you will make money". I understand the argument about not using rewards as the primary recruitment tool, but that doesn't seem like what this message is doing.

I disagree on that point...MONEY is very clearly placed foremost with the by line about quality content lowered in importance. This will lead to a huge increase in users, who ultimateley be disappointed with the rewards they get...leading to bad word of mouth which will really damage this awesome platform.

"Money talks" is different than "earn money" or anything along those lines. There is nothing in "money talks" that makes any implication of earning.

Again, as I said about Stellabelles idea, this might be hard for first time visitors to grasp.

I think even just the word MONEY, in an average person will immediately start them thinking about this socmed platform paying them...it is just human nature, if we see the word money we think either of losing it or having it taken from us, or earning/getting more of it. Steemit is a platform where we can potentially get more of it (money/rewards) but it sholud not be placed foremost in peoples minds when being introduced to this great platform.

they will never earn a single cent without investing.

This is far from the truth and I'm sure curie and other curation projects beg to differ. There aren't just "some exceptions", a big chunk of users start from scratch and earn their way up by being active.

further, this will only encourage even more bots

There are good bots and bad bots, the bad ones often get countered by the good ones or users that notice them. The majority of users don't join and think "how can I create a bot for this?"

You are correct, anyone has the potential to earn rewards at a reasonable level, but it does seem to be those who invested real money that are now whales and have huge earning potential, some may say an unfair advantage...but those whales quite rightly can expect a return for their investment of real money which is in many cases 10s or more of $ into STEEM and powering up increasing there ROI even more...is that unfair, NO.

About the bots, the bot population seems to be exploding more and more every day, you are correct in that many are good bots..although operated as a business, and a business main aim is to make a profit. Why are so many of these bots using an auction bidding process instead of flat rates...profit pure and simple. Is it wrong some say yes many say no (by using the services offered in their search for more rewards/money.

Even what many consider miniscule rewards can make a huge difference in a persons life depending upon their geographical location, this is a great thing about Steemit, it is socmed that truly gives back, the focus on money is hower=ver wrong and will backfire badly for Steemit when bad word of mouth spreads if users are not earning. People pissed off with the platfrom will tell many more about that than those happy with it. It is a marketing fact that people who believe they have been "taken" will talk a lot more than happy users.

Why are so many of these bots using an auction bidding process instead of flat rates...

There is randowhale that has flat rates and most followers, but yeah, each user has the freedom to use which bot they like, in the end supply for the bad or unfair ones will die off.

Agree 100%, there are only a very small percentage of daily users actually making any real rewards, but the really great things is there are no ads, and they don't use all your data to make more for Steemit Inc.

Focusing most on the money will bring many more users who eventully get pissed off when not earning what they expect (believe they were promised?) which will lead to bad press or bad word of mouth which will be very detrimental to Steemit as a platform. Focussing mostly on money is wrong, really wrong.

It's completely reduces the true value of steemit
It makes me sick to my stomach.
'money talks'
I hate it

yeah.. good question
I guess 'earn something' it close to zero.

This is CoOL!

Aaaand they completely missed the point of Steem I guess...

Now it's time to go and hope Busy, eSteem and Smoke Network can market this blockchain a whole lot better.

Remember, it's the social enterprise that has the value, not the money you can get whilst participating in it..
