The clippers were built for speed, evolved first in American and later in British yards. They were used during the middle of the 19th century, as a comparatively very fast international trade and passenger ship. A dominant impetus for the developments was to beat the other ships out and back with the enormously fashionable tea, and capture the tea trade.
