Virtually all varieties of this tree are not indigenous to North America. Most came from Europe with the early settlers. This tree produces an excellent edible fruit, which is used in endless cooking recipies, as well used to make alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Its bark is quite shaggy short stumpy spurs grow on them.
