Resteem The Deadpost Initiative! - Week 16 - Share your most undervalued work + week 15 winners ($11 STEEM prize pool)

in #contest7 years ago

What is the Deadpost Intitiative?

The Deadpost Initiative is an attempt to give love to some posts that were overlooked during their short 7 day life span, a chance to bring your old posts back to life and maybe make some friends in the process. The goal is not only to share some love with SBD but also by engagement to generate discussion.

Last week

This week was a great week for the Deadpost Initiative. We continue to get great deadposts and the engagemnt keeps going up. We are now getting more support so prizes will slowly be able to rise above 10 STEEM every week. Thank you everyone who contributes deadposts, replies to entries, upvotes, resteems, and reads these posts.

I mentioned in a post yesterday, that I would start using my upvote to try to curb the handicap on posts that aren't the first few of the week. I'll give a push to posts which have not gotten much notice. That means if don't upvote your entry right away, I will get to it towards the end of the week. We'll try this for a bit and see how it works.

Last Week's Winners

@axeman - $ 2.5 STEEM prize

I never expected to have wedding pictures in our deadpost contest, but this post deserved it. @axeman takes some great photos and everyone seemed to appreciate them very much.

Wedding stories - L&I

@celestal - $ 2.5 STEEM prize

@celestal shares with us another post from his series on criminal justice. I very much appreciate these posts as they look at many aspects of what could be done better with criminal justice including both the human side and the philosophical side.

Is Our Criminal Justice Flawed? | Retributive Justice and the (il)logic Behind It

@creationofcare - $ 2 STEEM prize

These are some eerie photos of some abandoned junk in Death Valley. I really find this kind of scenery fascinating, to wonder what kind of lives were being lived here, what took place and caused these objects to be put here and left here like this. Who they belonged to, every object has a story.

Ruins On Waucoba Rd: Death Valley Thanksgiving 2

@axios - $ 2 STEEM prize

I read this post the first time around before it was a deadpost and I was blown away with the consistent high quality of @axios's posts. I'm glad to see he's joined the deadpost initiative. In this post, he shares a lot of deep wisdom. He explains the reasoning behind doing exactly the opposite of what you are supposed to do and going straight towards your fears. Read it!

This Is Why I Live My Life Inversely

@irastra - $ 2 STEEM prize

This was really fascinating to me. I am not surprised that ideas like this have been floated around before, but to actually see them as they may have first been shared and to learn where they may have come from (a relative of Freud!?) was interesting! I'd really love to read this book!

Hi @whatamidoing. I had forgoten about this fantastic initative, when it popped in my head the other day. So here is another of my Scuba Scribe articles from a couple of months back. This is a detailed report of my experience snorkeling with whale sharks in Mexico, including a video that I shot on the trip. I remember being quite disappointed at the time when it only made $2. Thanks for this chance to revive the post and most importantly, share it with some new readers. I have upvoted and shall resteem this post: https://steemit.com/blog/@raj808/and-127909-scuba-scribe-6-mexico-the-greatest-whale-shark-aggregation-on-the-planet

I feel a little envious of you...
I did more than 100 dives and never saw one of those beautiful giants... the biggest thing I saw was a nurse shark...
Good luck!

I've been really lucky with my diving to be fair @lavidaesunviaje. The hammerhead in Egypt being the most amazing instance. It's why I feel such a spiritual affinity with the ocean, it seems like every time I jump in, somewhere tropical, I get sharks, turtles or some other awesome sea-life stopping by to say hello. I count myself blessed with my marine-encounter score. P.S. I have had some uneventful dives in the UK, where the best thing I saw was a crab or some moss ;-)

that was an awesome post @raj808 i loved it both times i read it now

Thanks man. The whale shark, she lives again ;-)

I love reading about your dive adventures and hate that I miss seeing so many posts from my friends! Glad to see you shared this one here!

Thanks @melinda010100. I appreciate the vote 👌 and am glad I could share some more of my adventures in Davy-Jones-locker 😉🐟🐠

Nice photos. Yes. We sure can relax when in nature and get more into synch with ourselves and realign back to more natural rhytms. In the city we pick up all sorts of frequencies, so we quickly fall out of natural rhytms that can replenish us.

Couldn't agree more @irastra. Thanks for your comment and vote. I have just read, voted and commented your post about our mess of un-biodegradable crap we create daily.

beautiful pictures and video. the oceans are so amazing and whales are so majestic!

Thank you @amariespeaks. I agree, the ocean is where I feel most alive! When diving it's just like flying through a dream-scape, floating in another world. Ha ha, I think you can tell I'm hooked ;-) Thanks for checking out my post, I'm glad you enjoyed it

Hi @whatamidoing this is a great idea... I was wondering how to revive my old posts... this is a detailed description of a hick climbing a volcano to see eruptions and lava a few meters away... I got only 0.35 for it and invested hours to make it...
https://steemit.com/volcano/@lavidaesunviaje/fuego-volcano-guatemala

Wow! This is an experience I would love to have some day. I hiked up inactive volcanoes in Lanzarote but well.... this is the real deal. Gr8 descriptions and pics @lavidaesunviaje, can't believe how close you got to the eruptions... epic :-)

yea man you should do it! its one of those amazing things that you can't compare with anything else... :)

Very beautiful photos. The trip was certainly worth the effort.

The night pictures are the best.

Good stuff man! :D

Woah @lavidaesunviaje this is absolutely EPIC! I cannot even begin to imagine what the experince was like behind the camera lens.

Your shots were gorgeous by the way and I think you did a great job capturing this event. I don't think I've ever heard of someone climbing a mountain to watch a volcano blow lol.

Bucket list = check!

Voted!

haha! thanks for your comment!
you should do it!
its erupting almost every day!
Go book your flight!!! :)
Thanks for your vote!

Those were some stellar images, @lavidaesunviaje! I can only imagine how awesome it must have been to be in the presence of, and witness a live, erupting volcano! Also, the view of the sunrise must've been breathtaking.
Glad you had success in viewing the volcano clearly in your third hike! :)

Appreciate the support you're giving out, @whatamidoing! :)
Here's a Naruto sprite animation that I had made which seems to have gone unnoticed -
https://steemit.com/video/@yesaye/kakashi-and-sasuke-fight-kisame-a-naruto-sprite-animation-video-wooohoo

Looks like a lot of effort has gone into this.

oh yes, what a great idea. here is one of my best pictures that I posted too early in my Steemit-life:
https://steemit.com/portraitphotography/@captainklaus/holy-family-ukraine-2005-c-print

The process of large format photography takes a lot of work and dedication. Thank you for sharing not only the results, but also the process and behind the scenes. Following @captainklaus now. Cheers

I love seeing the people from your travels! Thanks for sharing this one again!

Thanks for sharing. Family portraits are fun to look at.

I commented on your post.

xox

There's something about this portrait that is so interesting to me. I think it's just the fact that it's a really great capture. Feels very real. Thank you for sharing @captainklaus!

I gues this is beacause I let the people just be (and those people can just be), instead of trying to make them look some certain way....

An interesting photo, like you have pulled them straight from some old album.

here you can see the original print

always love finding new Steemians to follow through your deadposts @whatamidoing - it's an epicenter of lost treasures! here's my submission. Second post I ever made here on Steemit. Warning it's poetry! I know as of late I've been focusing on blog topics, tarot and art but I do love writing poetry. Hope someone out there enjoys it!

https://mspsteem.com/poetry/@amariespeaks/desertification-a-poem-of-hope

This is a beautiful poem. It got me thinking about the difference between the illusory rain of popularity and the true sustenance between individuals. Very appropriate for this contest.

Thank you <3 that is definitely one of the main things I was going for when I wrote it - didn't pick this one for the connection between the Deadpost and the poem, wasn't even thinking about that lol that's a really cool synchronicity!

That is actually an amazing poem!!! Can't believe it didn't get that much love but that's what happens early on at Steemit. Thanks for sharing!

thank you!! so happy you liked it! yeah, it's crazy so of my posts get a ton of views/votes and others just die off lol my poetry hasn't done very well on here

very good article, and I loved the line Any person in steemit becomes a guru in crypto.
That's so how I feel, after starting here a as a total crypto-newbie!

I can’t give this a prize cause it’s not over a month old, but I upvoted your post :-) it’s a fun post

Here's an old post of mine that I put a lot of efforts into:
https://steemit.com/life/@wandereronwheels/how-to-fix-auxiliary-lights-extra-led-s-on-ktm-duke-200-motorcycle

I loved reading @axios's "Your Reality Is NOT What You Think It Is" post and @lavidaesunviaje's volcanic eruption photographs. It's pretty rare to see them here.

Very well done post! I love instructional posts...I think that is what steemit should be all about, helping each other. Appreciate the effort you put into this post.

Yeah! Good to share knowledge, help each other and also get paid for it. :)
Thank you @jdwolicki.

I like DIY posts, they really show how something is done and also show the commitment of the person doing it at the first place! :)
Voting for you!
Best,
mountain.phil28

While I'm not a biker myself, I love the level of detailing that went into making the tutorial crystal clear and the effort that was put into it. The video in the end was an added bonus.
Great post, keep 'em coming!

Thanks a ton bud! :D

It’s no doubt a useful post to anyone with a motorcycle.

Thanks man. Appreciate it. :)

Here's my submission! Your Reality Is NOT What You Think It Is

I just want to throw out a big THANK YOU to @whatamidoing for hosting this contest and also for everyone who left such kind and inspiring comments on my post last month. Y'all are awesome and it's truly appreciated :)

That was an eye-opening post @axios! The idea of 'maps' reminded me of the teachings in '7 Habits Of Highly Effective People' - of the paradigm shift. Any chance you may have read it? :)
Do keep creating such valuable posts and spreading messages of love and understanding, as it is greatly needed in the current self-obsessed world that we live in... or that we think we live in! ;)
Cheers.

Thank you so much for this feedback @yesaye! I really do appreciate it. I have read that book before - most definitely a great one. In my opinion, there are certian truths expressed in many different ways... so whether its from life, a book, a movie, or what not - as long as you get it, you get it!

Thanks again for the awesome and kind words here @yesaye!

Anytime buddy!

Like this post a lot, the world truly is all in the way we perceive it. recognizing your own filter and belief systems is very important, I think at least, it allows you to be empathetic and even just maybe see another perspective you pushed off before. Great post!

So true! Thank you so much @amariespeaks :)

I loved this post when originally posted and still do!

Still leaves me a tad tangled ~ p'raps it's a case of third time lucky for me.

Haha.

This subject resonates with me right now, because I was actually having a pretty intense discussion about this earlier today.

The phrase epistemic humility comes to mind. Most of your essay makes sense to me, in that there is a larger reality differentiated from anyone's particular perception of it. To say "truth is relative" strikes me as reckless in the face of this, however.

This suggests that the fallibility of subjective perception somehow defines truth itself. Truth is simply what has happened and what is happening. Whether anyone knows it or not does not alter this - and I make this statement as a matter of epistemic humility. That very humility provides the usefulness of such a statement, which corresponds with much of what you wrote.

I like your epistemic humility phrase there. In my opinion it demonstrates that we operate with very little bits of the truth, while at the same time, operating fully from it by acknowledging that we don't know what we don't know.

Most of your essay makes sense to me, in that there is a larger reality differentiated from anyone's particular perception of it. To say "truth is relative" strikes me as reckless in the face of this, however.

There's different forms of truth in this sense then, isn't there? The truth of one person seeing at point 1a is likely different from the truth of the person observing from point 1b. They may share an objective truth, yet their personal truths are strictly based on where they are, in relation to the point of observation and the context from which they filter their own experience.

This can get very heady very fast. I think that it really does come down to the question, how do you define truth?"

I don't agree or disagree with you here @fireawaymarmot. I am mostly curious as to which truth is truth for you...

Thanks for reading and sharing this very intriguing perspective!

Interesting post, really got me thinking about my perception of reality, and the fact that my reality is only mine and no one else's. I think you just managed to blow my mind. Follower earned!

loved this post he first time around, loved it the second time around as well

Wow, I ran into this initiative by accident and what an amazing accident it was. Great original idea, thanks for putting it on. Here is my post from a month ago...its travel advice about visiting Cinque Terre in Italy.
https://steemit.com/travel/@jdwolicki/visit-cinque-terre-italy-in-a-day-by-train
Now I'm off to to go through everyone else's submissions.

Useful for anyone traveling there, it would be really nice if posts like these were indexed somewhere for future use, a steemit travel wiki. There’s an idea to propel you forward if it hasn’t been done yet.

That is an incredibly good idea!! Wow, you've got a great knack for this...I might run with this kind of concept in addition to my website blog!!

Here's one that seemed to slip by people's notice.... Thanks for the opportunity to give it another chance.
https://steemit.com/writing/@fireawaymarmot/privacy-illusion-or-reality

Excellent thinking, and differentiation between privacy and secrecy which I think most people think of as one single unit without realizing the different nature between them. Also very current topic now that we are entering a new economy with cryptocurrencies as to what currencies and models we are going to adopt for mainstream.

Thank you very much. It will be something to watch for going forward...

Amazing post. You bring up a lot of great points. I have always hated that line, "If you're doing nothing wrong you've got nothing to hide." such BS. Very thought provoking! Earned yourself a new follower! :)

"The difference between privacy and secrecy is that privacy involves only those individuals who choose to participate and secrecy always involves someone else who did not, or could not, make that choice, whether they knew it or not."

Thank you very much for your comments and support. I checked out your page and I like your work.

thank you! :)

"If you're not doing anything wrong then you don't have anything to hide."

I have been told this too many times, even by my parents. what a load of bull. Privacy is developmental like you said and essential. I think EVERYBODY should read this post. Oh and you earned a new follower!

Thanks kindly for your recognition of my essay's concept, as well as your words of support.

Ahhh, I loved the! There seems to be a lot of emphasis on transparency as some kind of ultimate virtue emerging through this generation of people raised with the internet, and transparency is set up as the opposite of privacy. I would much prefer to look at privacy in contrast to secrecy as you explore here. I wrote a response to Dan (developer of steemit and EOS) when he stated we needed radical transparency in order to eliminate bad actors and prove to those who seek to control us that we have nothing to hide. I argued that transparency should come from the top down, becoming more of a requirement with the more power an organization or individual has, and that for us regular folk, it should be encouraged to foster trust, but entirely optional.

I think your article would have helped me to make an even better argument. I hope that you can rewrite it once you’ve grown a bigger following and really get this idea out there more!

Thanks very much. I'm sure Dan is quite adept at negotiation, so there may have been a particular context for his comments - I haven't had the chance to read them directly. I will say that in order for trust to function properly, it needs to be earned mutually, a two way street through the commons of public communication.

Those who create a common space (like a website) for others to use (by choice) have the right to set the rules for transparency, as long as they're up front and consistent about this, and keep those rules within the voluntary space that they have set. However, power in many forms does create multiple pressures around this notion.

Freedom of choice in respect to personal privacy is a line that must be held fast.

The conundrum we have now is that these websites become increasingly difficult to opt out of. As much as I’d like to close my Facebook account, it would takes weeks of research to put together contact information for all the people I’m friends with on there and even if I did, many would ignore my emails because they’re more used to using Facebook to contact. Even if we opt out theyccollect information on all IP addresses. If you have a smartphone it always comes with iOS or Android. So it becomes a much bigger issue than “our platform, we set the rules, deal with them”

Dan worried me a bit with his reasoning because he seemed to imply that we should all be willing to share anything and everything about ourselves in order to prevent those in power to justify a crackdown on crypto and whatever platform we are using. I’m not sure how far he wants to go with this or how flexible he is. He didn’t reply to my comment, there were so many comments haha

Those are very good points - I was thinking about this when I wrote of multiple pressures. A lot of these platforms have pulled a bait and switch in regards to their rules, not being upfront and consistent at all.

How much of an option "voting with your feet" amounts to, depends on two variables (that come to mind): the variety of alternative options available (from websites to browsers, v.p.n.'s, and even different s.p.'s), and how much of the aggregate population can become well informed on these matters. More specifically, how well informed are the people that one needs to communicate with in these ways.

From what I can see the options for migrating contacts is mostly between large platforms. I know that minds.com has a migration option from facebook, at least in general.

I'm also aware of how "voting with your feet" can mean giving up ground upon which you've invested, to say nothing of the many costs of moving (including the strategic implications of giving up ground). The strongest argument to make in respect to this is to confront the arbitrary practice of rules set by the owners of those platforms, and that they need to be held responsible to their word.

Your earlier point about transparency from the top down relative to power corresponds with a lot of this. A Discord group, for example, setting it's own rules, can bring more of a "take it or leave it" approach. But even at that level it's important not to bait and switch people on your rules. And the way that power tends to consolidate into control over others, is always a thing to keep in mind.

Having different transparency relative to power can only be effective when people are well informed going in to a platform, otherwise you end up relying on an even more powerful entity imposing transparency rules on that platform. And that larger entity comes with it's own propensity for corruption and arbitrary rule. Unfortunately most of us have been duped into a lot of these platforms, and it will take a great deal of difficult work to find a workable solution.

Will blockchain technology render the freedom to choose obsolete? Or could it enhance such freedom? I think that freedom and responsibility, for what you choose to bring to others, go hand in hand. They are not opposites.

A quick possible example of strategically effective "voting with your feet": the history of Image Comics.
