That may or may not be a good thing... ;) I know it makes it easier to enter, but how does it affect your chances of winning if the barriers to entry are removed?

I perceive it as a consequence of the currently low STEEM prices. It's cheaper than ever to enroll for a lifetime of SBI upvotes, so why not run a contest or two (dozen) and drive a little more traffic to your page that way?
