Diogenes heteropsammicola
The new crab species, called Diogenes heteropsammicola, was identified by researchers at the University of Kyoto in the waters of the Amami Islands, near Taiwan, and in Okinawa, belonging to the RyuKyu archipelago.
The research results have been published in the Plos One scientific journal and demonstrate how this new crustacean has evolved and differentiated by its relatives, originating a new species with distinctly morphological and functional features.
Unlike traditional shells, corals are living beings: small polyps typically assembled in colonies, with which the crab developed a kind of mutualistic symbiosis, that is, with an advantage for both.
