Cathy's Flower House Door - 22 December 2024

in #crafts2 days ago

Every so often since April this year a couple of friends and I get together to build our greenhouse. This is a kit that you can find here. The kit now costs around £40 or about 240 Steem. It was a present and when we finish it it will be awesome to look at.

Below you can have a look at some of the things I’ve made so far :

I'm specially happy with the lighting in the above photo - it's natural lighting.

A selection of parts for our flower house.

A friend manages the project : she gathers all the pieces needed per part and cuts the paper bits to apply. Another friend just plays music for us to listen to while crafting.

There are many videos on You Tube that show how to make the kit and what it should look like. Below you can watch one of them :

After months of inactivity and actually dreading making some parts, especially the door, we finally accomplished it. The result may not be that polished but it’s okay.

The process included getting all the materials ready :

Above you can see the parts needed to complete the greenhouse door : two door sides (notice how they’re shaped), small sheet of plastic for the glass, wire and two beads, sign and door guard. You also need to have glue, pliers, and lots of patience.

Nowhere did it say to do this but I cut tiny bits of masking tape to secure the ‘sheet of glass’, ie thick plastic, before dabbing on the glue. I wanted to avoid having the door frame glued well and then the glass shifting (moving down etc).

When the other side of the door was glued it of course didn’t look very neat. I used the only tight paper clip I could find handy and two pegs to try and keep it all tightly glued together.

Even with the pegs there was too much of a gap for my liking as the red arrow above shows.

If you look closely you can see glue on the ‘glass’. The glue provided with the kit is not very good quality. This photo of the finished result of the handle hides the drama behind it. I had just managed to complete the process when I discovered that I’d glued the handle on the wrong side ! I quickly discussed with my friend the implications of having the door handle on the wrong side, and then I just pulled it off and glued it onto the right side. It was very fiddly, sticky and messy, but I sorted it.

Above you can see the finished door with the lattice door guard and door sign.

I later found this short video on You Tube showing how ‘simple’ the process is. I will clarify straight away that it’s not that simple. To start with you have to cut a fine wire that’s used to make the door handle. You must therefore also have a ruler handy. After finding a pair of pliers to cut the wire you need to bend it at specific intervals and then feed it through two tiny holes, dab some glue and then move the door ‘beads’ to the right place.

We still have a long way to go but we are determined to complete this soon. The next obstacle is the wiring that will connect a little light inside.

Thank you for reading !
