I was close to Mombasa in 2008 before Kenya was deemed an unsafe holiday destination by the tour operators.
My only recollection of the city was the safari operator exchanging some money with Somalians in a bad area. it was quite unnerving considering this nations reputation of piracy and kidnap.
An interesting juxtaposition of very old and modern - old (yet still functional!) buildings with very modern automobiles! The cars won’t last much more than a generation, yet the buildings have stood for centuries.

Seems alright now! I was walking around solo and had zero problems aside from touts.

I really wish they took better care of these wonderful buildings, but I can imagine there's little money available for maintenance and restoration.
