Think of it this way--Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash are incompatible, however, the share a similar past. Previous addresses were all the same on both but the protocol wouldn't allow the transfer of value from the new chain to the old. It can be confusing for sure but the longer you stay in the space and learn, the more it starts making sense.
