Orvium - Project Introduction

Science according to Wikipedia can be regarded as “the scholarly and practical activity encircling the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiments. Science is also regarded as the torch that illuminates the world.

 The revolution of science since the existence of the world has been at a very rapid rate, creating different technological and scientific changes which alleviate the way we live and associate in our environment. 

Scientific and technological changes have only been possible through scientific research, which involves the critical investigation of scientific theories and hypothesis, reviewing of the research journals and the publishing of research journal. The industry responsible for this process is the scientific publishing industry. This industry is such that is rated extremely valuable and with a profit margin known to exceed the profits of some global brands (like Google, Apple, and Amazon), which is due to the high relevance placed on the industry by government and other private institutions that grant them funds. 

Problems 

Despite the soaring value of the scientific publishing industry, the system is wired in such a way that it is inundated with flaws and inefficiency which have drastically affected scientific research growth. Some of the challenges of the industry are discussed below

Triple pay system: The triple pay system is an economic model created by the private scientific publishers. This system has an adverse effect on the dissemination and growth of scientific knowledge, as the parties responsible for the research and review are less recognized and compensated. 

The triple pay system is designed in such a way that private scientific publishers receive grants or funds from the government or private institutions to conduct research which will be done by researchers or research institutions. Along the lines scientists that are usually sponsored or paid by the government or private institutions get to review the research work and after the whole research process is complete, they sell the work back to the government or private institutes. 

The system calls for a change and efficiency as the industry is oligopolize by the scientific publishers. They avoid the necessary coats in the research process and still sell the research to make outrageous profits without properly compensating the Author and reviewers. 

Wrong claim of copyrights: After the whole research process is completed and published, one would have thought the authors of the work would enjoy the benefits of copyright for the work completed by them but no, the publishers hold the claim on copyright. Is there another word to qualify this than exploitation?

Rightful control of copyright: The present publication industry is designed in such a way that after the stressful process of conducting a research by the authors, all the derivable benefits are enjoyed by the publishers who have a wrong claim on the copyright. Orvium offers authors opportunity to regain control of their copyright and all potential benefits from their research through its automated copyright system. 

Low cost of publication: Through the creation of a peer to peer system, where the actors in the industry can interact transparently and get rewarded for contributing to various tasks that require money to complete, Orvium will be able to reduce costs spent on publications 

The creation of a social platform where people can interact together and improve research publications

Elimination of current predatory practices (e.g. plagiarism, idea ownership and other forms of academic theft) in the industry

As Blockchain began to gain more popularity in recent times, a lot of decentralized platforms have been launched in different industries. Some of these platforms even complete with each other for recognition and adoption in the same industry. Though there thousands of decentralized platforms with different purpose, but none has been created to tap into the scientific publishing industry.

Orvium is a decentralized platform that targets to revolutionize the scientific publishing industry. The platform is designed in such a way that will enhance and improve the quality of the industry. The major strength of Orvium is the fact that it is the first of its kind, which makes it at advantage of being the market breaker in its industry. Weakness

The Blockchain technology is still in its infancy stage and still moving towards mass adoption globally. Also considering how large the scientific publishing industry is and wealthy the present top publishers are, breaking into the industry and competing with the existing players in the industry will not come easily. Mass adoption might be an issue for this project at its initial stage but as time goes on and with the innovative features and solution Orvium possesses, it will definitely get mass adopted.

Team 

The impact of a team in the success of a project is just as important as the purpose of the project because the team is responsible for directing the project to success.

The project Orvium was founded by three people namely:

 Manuel Martin: Manuel Martin is the senior project leader and Blockchain expert. He is a technologically inclined expert and has succeeded led critical data management, big data and machine learning initiatives for CERN LHC. This makes sense considering that a larger part of this project technology would be using machine learning and data management.

Antonio Romero: Antonio Romero is the technology solution architect. He is also a technology inclined expert and well experience, as he has collaborated with other institutions such as Fermilab, GSI and EMBL-EBI

 Roberto Rabasco:  Roberto Rabasco is the Application and cloud technology expert. He has wealth of ten years experience working for companies like Deutsche Telekom, Just Eat or Asos Ltd. 

There are other members of the team whom are also experts, well experienced and capable of delivering this project. I have no doubt that this team is extremely capable of achieving the project milestones in the set time-frame and also make the project a success.

Conclusion

Orvium extremely adds value to the scientific publishing industry and also to the entire human race. Its features and technology are unique and differentiates it from the vast majority of decentralized platforms launching in the crypto space. Orvium also has the advantage of a readily developed industry that is worth billions of dollars.
