So WTF is Cryptocurrency ? - How to go insane trying to teach yourself this shit
Are you new to Steemit too?
As I am new to this site and cryptocurrencies and blockchains in general; I’m trying to learn all I can.
Please feel free to correct me in the comments about anything I do share or comment because this is just a learning process for me and a ton of other people, too!
I recently realized how little I know about the technological world we all operate in, the Internet of Things. - I just learned this is what we are calling the internet now...or for a while now?
I’m a millennial and I’ll admit I’m so far behind the times I thought millennial meant those kids born during the early 2000’s. I learned AOL back in the day, I made those pixel dolls and those shitty journal websites you could easily build yourself in say, 1998. That’s the extent of my internet knowledge/experience. So as you can imagine I’ve got a lot to learn...
If you just started on Steemit or have been a member for a little while, like me, and want to learn more please comment below - maybe we can help eachother out and end the hair-tearing out confusion that comes with learning something new and complex.
So first off, what exactly is cryptocurrency? As soon as I started looking it I saw there is an entire history behind its invention and all this mystery with Satoshi Nakamoto - I’m not going to get into all that right now. Interesting as it is, (I’m sure I’ll check into it more later) I’m going to focus on the meaning or impact cryptocurrencies have on us in our lives.
BlockGeeks has this article: What is Cryptocurrency: Everything You Need To Know [Ultimate Guide] and it gives great visuals and examples to break down the basics of cyrptocurrency in general.
I thought this article was easy to read and fun. I highly recommend it. Here’s some highlights:
- “A cryptocurrency like Bitcoin consists of a network of peers. Every peer has a record of the complete history of all transactions and thus of the balance of every account.”
- “Confirmation is a critical concept in cryptocurrencies. You could say that cryptocurrencies are all about confirmation. As long as a transaction is unconfirmed, it is pending and can be forged. When a transaction is confirmed, it is set in stone. It is no longer forgeable, it can‘t be reversed, it is part of an immutable record of historical transactions: of the so-called blockchain.”
This article also lists some of the most popular cryptocurrencies and gives a description of each.
It was super helpful in gaining knowledge of the different types of coins and tokens available.
The David Pakman Show on YouTube put out this great video: A Guide to Cryptocurrency & Steemit with by Andrew Levine, Team Member of Steemit.
This one is a great intro video to Steemit and cryptocurrency in general. They cover a ton of topics about the Steemit platform in about 30 mins.
Another video which tackles cryptocurrencies as well as Steem is this video by Suppoman Udemy,: NEW STEEMIT?? IS THIS THE NEXT BIG CRYPTO??
I like this channel a lot, Suppoman is full of energy and great information. In this one he talks about the current market, different cryptocurrencies, Steemit and gives some ideas on how to invest.
There are a qutie few Steemit members on YouTube and they give out a ton of great information. I've used their videos to inform myself better a little more and if you're looking to dive in and learn more search Steemit on YouTube and you won't be disappointed.
Comment below if you know of any other good channels, articles, blogs or Steemit users that give out some gold nuggets of wisdom!
We all want to learn more about this platform and understand what we are investing our time, talents and fiat currency in, so let's help each other to learn more.

Good stuff. I'll bookmark this to share with anyone who asks. I think some of the vets here may forget from time to time that there are still people coming into the platform and people lurking, who may just need more basic info. 👍🏾
Thanks! I have been on here for a little while but the complexity made me weary but now I have the time to put some effort into learning this platform so hopefully I'll catch on quick!
Thank you for this. As a new Steemian myself, these resources should prove super helpful. And don't beat yourself about technological literacy. I write about tech for a newspaper, but blockchains and cryptocurrency have left me scratching my head a lot too. The times we live in.
You're so welcome, I'm so happy I'm not alone! lol but seriously! this tech stuff is mind boggling sometimes.
Just gonna keep learning little by little and I'll keep posting new links and videos as I come by them! :) -namaste
