Perceptions of beauty
From Kenya,we go eastwards to Ethiopia.
The Mursi tribe is located in Ethiopia; they are an isolated tribe surrounded by mountains and other land forms close to the border of South Sudan. Like other African tribes, beauty is intricately knitted in their culture. One prominent feature of a beautiful mursi woman is her lip plate also called the"dhebi á tugoin". It is customary for the women to wear large clay disc or wooden disc (though this practice is no longer compulsory, as some Mursi women decide to exempt themselves from this ritual). The lip plate ritual is an indication of the social standing and reproductive potential of a woman.
The Mursi tribe also stretch their ears and adorn themselves with beaded earrings and headdresses which can be made with other materials such as horns gotten from cattle, gun shells, fruits or anything that they feel will improve their appearance and make them more attractive.
Under skin tatoos and body paintings is an essential beauty routine for the mursi people as, both men and women indulge in it. For the men, under skin tatoos are done to express victory over an opponent in war or in a specific task, while women do it as a form of body decoration.
The Suri tribe of South western Ethiopia and also the Me'en tribe have similar ways to the Mursi tribe of beautifying themselves.
The series continue in a bit..😊
