Interesting, I can't decide whether I agree with you or not... This type of race will attract a certain type of cyclists, and we have so many races to choose from, that there is something for everybody...
I'm just saying, the athletes spend a lot of time conditioning themselves specifically for the race. This is months and up to a year. If you went to the race and got lost all of your pre race efforts would be in the trash.
I say help out the athletes with the course/guidance as it is already physically demanding doing those types of distances...
