Dad Tip of the Day: Accidents

in #dad8 years ago

Dad tip of the day: Accidents will happen and kids will get hurt, but that is part of growing up.

When it comes to kids, it is not a matter of “if” the next accident will happen, but “when”. As parents, we always feel terrible when an accident does happen and one of our kiddos gets hurt, especially if it is caused by us. Kids forgive quickly though, especially since you did not mean it, so don’t beat yourself up too much. In fact, a little danger and small accidents are really growing and learning opportunities in disguise.

I have been reminded of this on a few occasions lately, as I have been the cause of a few of the kid’s accidents. The worst accident I caused recently was letting Jacob get his hand slightly burned on a stove pan. I was making scrambled eggs for everyone and Jacob wanted to help. I brought the step stool over and handed him the spatula. I had the pan preheating, and turned away to grab the eggs. He somehow slipped on the step stool (not too high off the ground) and tried to catch himself, but put his hand right on the hot pan, giving him some minor burns. Poor guy. I felt terrible. The burns were not too bad and no doctor trip was necessary, but it was tender for a few days. So I first fried his hand, and then I fried the eggs.

I also was putting Kendra in her high chair to have some lunch, and accidentally pinched her arm when securing the tray… ouch! She was OK and there was no blood, but I still felt bad hearing her little cries.

Of course, there are accidents all the time, and that is just part of growing up – like Jacob falling off his bike and scraping up his knee. Such is life and it comes with the territory.

Just like the kids heal up and forget all about it, we parents need to be gracious with each other and ourselves and move on, as life keeps on going regardless of whether you feel bad. Of course, the fewer the major accidents the better, and we have been blessed not to have any hospital visits for injuries… yet! Hopefully writing this did not jinx us…

I appreciate you reading and I welcome any comments or stories you have as well!

Brian

You’re the best dad, accidents and all 😘

i am really shocked to listening your news. tske care doing jacob,s and next time you doing this work time very carefull.because its very risk for baby. I think it is part of the growth, it is also difficult to prevent children from hurting their knees or those knee marks that almost everyone has, I think they are impossible to avoid, there are only have to be a little careful but they are things that happen..thank you sharing for your post..take care your baby properly.i hope that,he very early come back better situation her hand...may god bless your child. my dear friend.. @brian.rrr

Your child was hurt and I assure you that as parents it hurts much more accidents happen and we can not avoid them if we have caused it that helps us for the next time we are more attentive, I feel so much about Jacod
You are excellent parents and the same loves you very much

One kid accident my wife and I had was a sharp knife that was dropped dead center on my daughter's right foot. No tears though but did have a $1000 hospital bill.🤯

This is how these accidents happen, they can only be avoided a bit, but I think it is part of the growth, it is also difficult to prevent children from hurting their knees or those knee marks that almost everyone has, I think they are impossible to avoid, there are only have to be a little careful but they are things that happen

He sure is a cutie all bandaged up. You know what they say.... we always hurt the ones we love the most. I don’t know if this is the right application. Just sayin. Lol. 🐓🐓

Feeling sad to know the news. Jacob you are so cute as i pray to God for your bright future. When i was 7 years old my right hand was broken for jumping from mango tree. Now i'm ok but childhood momeries always rememberable. Your great tips change our baby's future. I wish your baby will be a great man.

I feel so bad to hear this story, it really makes me desperate as a mother to think about the accidents that can happen, my son one day before christmas he hit the wall that had a sharp edge and opened up a wound that needed two stitches, I was working, so that trip home, it was the worst in the world, it looked like the car was going like a turtle, we went to the hospital and his screams were disheartening, well, my child is naughty, so these things can happen!
For burns I recommend mustard, right after the burn, apply enough mustard and although I don't know the scientific explanation, I have tried it and the results are excellent!

What a shame for Jacob, the good thing is that there were not serious burns, something normal that can happen in the kitchen, so do not feel bad. It's part of the learning process or the path that we travel until adults. We usually have moments where we hurt ourselves. prone to live these moments, I have no children but if they are raw and if they have had their falls and blows but you have to get up, happy night

Jacob was very lucky that he need not go to hospital, all the burns hurt for a while and I hope he is recovering well. You are right there are many minor injuries and accident that we forget but even many years later I have shiver when I recall some of ours.

I remember our son when he was 2 y.o. decided to pull on beautiful green string of the plant that was on high shelf and the pot of course fell down just some mm missing his nose. When I think that it might have fallen on his head that makes me sick. So he was scarred by all the noise of crushing pot and the soil on the floor. But since then we do not have any plants with long hanging strings :)
Cheers, @Stef1
