Daily wisdom: Conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts. Ben Sira 3:17

in #dailylast month (edited)

The sapiential books teach, among many other things, that humility is not merely desirable but extremely necessary because humility helps to avoid great mistakes. And this is especially important for the most powerful because if these people do not handle their affairs with righteousness and fear of God, they are the most likely to commit the most serious sins; that is why the master Ben Sira taught in his book a quote of daily wisdom:
"Humble yourself the more, the greater you are,
and you will find mercy in the sight of God" Ben Sira 3:18.
Humble people are those who can accept criticism without their self-esteem being threatened; humble people are those who are aware that they don't know everything and that they have something to learn every day. Humility should not be confused with being stupid; being humble means not falling for provocations, not falling into conflicts that can be avoided.
This is why Ben Sira expressed that being humble means being kind; that is, humility precedes the ability to allow oneself to be loved by others, something very necessary for life in society. That is why Ben Sira taught:
"My son, conduct your affairs with humility,
and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts" Ben Sira 3:17.
Humility as a human virtue is very close to wisdom and the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity), and is contrary to the hardness of the heart. Ben Sira taught in his book that the Lord blesses the humble; pride, the opposite of humility, is very dangerous and can bring down the most powerful men at the least expected moment. And to refer to the proud men, Ben Sira wrote:
"A stubborn mind will be burdened by troubles,
and the sinner adds sin to sins" Ben Sira 3:27.
The sapiential books like the Book of Ben Sira invite men to reflect, to seek the correct path in life, and to understand that there is only one truth; it is within men to have the humility or the common sense to understand that there is a principle of order in the universe, and that men's behaviors are subject to this order for blessing or curse.
