Here is why trading your design for commercials is pointless.
People have absolutely nothing to do with it.
Hello.
My name is Pierre and today I'm going to show you why exchanging your work for advertising is useless.
People don't give a shit. It's as simple as that.
Because this advertising will absolutely not be targeted. it won't give you any results.
When you work for a customer, whoever they are (an individual, a friend, a company, a random structure...) this customer necessarily has a network.
People around him he's talking to, people he might be working with.
This client may have a hearing. People who follow him on the Internet for the work he does.
These people around this person are not there because they want to know who's the designer behind that new branding.
They are actually there because they follow the work of this creator. They don't even need a designer to create anything for them.
They don't care about design.
And yes, we designers are doomed to live in the shadows.
"Hello, can you make me a logo and a banner for free in exchange for an ad in my next video? I have 24,000 subscribers on Youtube."
You absolutely must avoid this kind of deal.
These 24,000 people will have no idea who you are. They won't be there to find out. This ad in this video will have no effect on them.
They don't want to know.
Here's the recipe that works.
First, money. If your work is correct and is qualitative and timeless enough (we'll talk about it in a future article) you have to exchange it for money!
It's as simple as that.
All work deserves its pay.
Are you going to your baker's house to ask for two free chopsticks saying
"Hello, could I have two free chopsticks please, in exchange I'll do you some publicity, I have 13 friends in high school."
No. Because it doesn't work with him!
And it shouldn't work with you.
Imagine telling these 13 friends that you are advising them about this bakery because you had some very good bread there.
They just won't going to care.
You have to get paid for your work.
And if you want publicity, you can do it yourself.
You will be able to advertise much more targeted people with this money.
We're talking about:
24,000 people, 95% of whom don't care about you because they don't need a designer for anything.
to 5,000 people, 95% of whom might be interested in your work because they are creating content and will need a designer at some point.
So we're talking about 1,200 people who might be interested.
versus 4750 people possibly in need.
It's completely different.
And how do you address these people who need a designer?
By going after them where they are.
Not by making your customers scream your name on their Youtube channel or Twitter account.
We'll talk about it in the next article.
