Dhurbe Hatti is a famous wild elephant from Nepal, known for its unusual and aggressive behavior. It gained national attention for attacking human settlements and causing damage in the Chitwan National Park area, especially in the buffer zones.
The name "Dhurbe" was given by locals, and the elephant is easily identified due to its distinct features, including one broken tusk. Dhurbe became infamous after a series of incidents where it attacked homes, destroyed crops, and in some tragic cases, even killed people. These events led to several efforts by the Nepali authorities to track, tranquilize, and even relocate or control Dhurbe, but the elephant often managed to avoid capture.
Despite its violent history, Dhurbe is also a symbol of the complex relationship between humans and wildlife in Nepal. Rapid urbanization, habitat loss, and human encroachment into forest areas have increased such conflicts. Many conservationists believe that elephants like Dhurbe are reacting to the stress caused by human activities in their natural habitat.
Today, Dhurbe Hatti remains a well-known and controversial figure in Nepal’s conservation story — both feared and respected.
