I visited the Chittagong Maa-O-Shishu Hospital which is an private hospital providing healthcare and other medical services at affordable rates. It is one of the oldest hospitals in Chittagong city. Patients primarily visit here for any services related to maternal and child health.

Located in Agrabad, one of the major commercial areas of Chattogram, the medical building stands right opposite Jamburi Park. It is a 12-story building with various medical service sections throughout. Being a medical facility, it remains open 24/7, gives patients to access emergency services at any time.

Maa-O-Shishu Hospital has been selected as the first cancer research center in Chattogram. All medical activities are managed through the funding of approximately 140+ donors and shareholders. Despite being a private hospital, the costs here are relatively lower than other private hospitals due to these donors, making it a preferred choice for middle-class patients.

The hospital contains every facility a patient might need. A significant advantage is the hospital's own pharmacy, ensuring medicines are available whenever required. There is a large dedicated pharmacy on almost every other floor, so patients can easily access necessary medicines regardless of which floor they are receiving treatment on.

The hospital is quite large, and every time I have visited, I noticed a significant crowd. Since private hospitals are often too expensive and government hospitals sometimes lack quality care, people come here for their necessary treatments.

The facility is equipped with emergency care units such as Life Support, ICU, CCU, HDU, NICU, and PICU. A positive aspect is that there are 30 seats available in the ICU and CCU, increasing the benefits of finding a vacant bed during emergencies. Furthermore, as it is a Mother and Child hospital, a specific unit is dedicated solely to mothers and children.

I am sharing some views of the building's interior to give you a good idea of the overall environment. I once came here to seek treatment for my grandmother; she was admitted to the emergency CCU unit, which gave me the opportunity to observe their environment closely.

The entire floor was air-conditioned. Not just the patient rooms, but also the halls where relatives wait were fully climate-controlled. Each floor was so clean that anyone would feel comfortable there.

The hospital consists of a 12-story building and two separate wings—one specifically for mothers and children, and the other for emergency ICU, CCU, and HDU services. The new building has been designed to integrate seamlessly with the older structures. There are 2–3 lift points on each floor of the entire building.

The lift service is of high quality, with separate elevators for patients and doctors to facilitate quick movement during emergencies. Operators are appointed to manage all the lifts. For those comfortable with stairs, staircases are located at the corners of the building.

All types of medical tests are available here at affordable rates. Facilities for ECG, Ultrasonography, Urine RE, Echo, X-ray, FBS/RBS, HbA1c, and many other necessary tests are available. The best part is that the prices are relatively low; even if patients consult doctors elsewhere, they often come here to get their prescribed tests done.

Regarding cabins and emergency units, the facilities are excellent. Having entered the cabins and emergency units myself, I found them to be as good as, if not better than, those in other private hospitals.

The hospital follows a rule where the patient must prepay for necessary medicine costs and other requirements, while the hospital only charges for the bed and services. This makes stay in the cabins or emergency care units more affordable compared to other private hospitals, while the quality of care remains high.

There are few hospitals as large as this in my city. Most private hospitals are smaller in scale; such large buildings are usually only seen in government facilities. However, the development of Maa-O-Shishu Hospital has been possible because established people in the city contribute through charity.

The hospital provides a canteen, washrooms, and other necessary services for all visitors. To ensure visitors can pray on time, a separate floor outside the main hospital area is dedicated to a mosque, which I found to be very beautiful and modern.

Dustbins are placed at various points throughout the building to keep the environment clean. Additionally, I noticed important notices and guides posted on the walls, which help visitors find their desired services easily.

The hospital is always crowded with patients and visitors. Expert professor-level doctors hold their chambers here. Since many patients visit for medical tests, a large number of staff members work at the reception simultaneously to manage the crowd, which I found to be very efficient.

What are the important emergency services there?

As a private hospital, it offers every emergency service a patient might need. Its specialty lies in having units that are not available in other private hospitals in the city. Along with being the city's first cancer center, it provides all kinds of emergency care.

I saw emergency ambulance services outside the building. Since patients may need an ambulance at any time, they provide a hotline number for ambulances and other online services. Combined with their 24-hour emergency care unit, there is no cause for worry.

Emergency units are located up to the 6th floor, with cabin rooms on the floors above. The ground floor houses the 24-hour emergency service, where a patient is first checked before being transferred to the appropriate unit ICU, CCU, HDU, Gynecology, etc . Ward boys and nurses are available to assist patients, ensuring high-quality emergency support.
