Essential oils and Your Dog's Ears
If your pooch struggles with ear infections, this may help you too!
Stella loves to swim plus a few food reactions can give her mild to sever ear irritations/infections. She will shake her head like crazy along with redness and tenderness in and around her ear- this is the tell tale sign.
Sometimes the ears will also have an odour. Not so with Stella but true for our late Chocolate Lab.
Before I panic and run to vet imagining the worst and then throw her on a bunch of medication, I consider a couple of things...
- Has she been fed by others recently?...meaning I don't have control of what's going into her belly. Eggs and meat cause tremendous reactions in her. Yes, even organic.
- Has she been swimming?
At the time of this video, both were true so we enter into level 1 of dog ear remedy/drama. That does mean we have a second level. Yup. Stay tuned for that video.
Recipe: Mix together 1 tbsp of coconut oil + 2 drops of tea tree oil + 2 drops of peppermint oil. *
Rub into ears, the peppermint oil will quickly soothe the irritation.
If like Stella, the pup also has an ear hematoma from shaking so much, follow the application with a wrapping of their head with the ears placed "naturally" - for Stella, that is ears forward. Pretty sure that's normal for all dogs but do your own observations. The wrap only needs to stay on for a couple of minutes until the soothing peppermint is in full swing.
I reapply once a day for a few days. If I don't see improvement by day 2-3, time to consider "level 2" or visit the vet.
The mix you make keeps at room temperature for a long time. It also works for humans....applied to a qtip.
*make sure to use a double tested reliable source for your essential oils. ALWAYS!
