5 new puppies dropped off in the night

in #dogs2 days ago

This was really disappointing because I really felt like we had crossed this line and that people weren't going to do this anymore. Also, our years long drive to find and sterilize any and all dogs that we could find appeared to be making an impact. I am sure that it is, because we have sterilized thousands of dogs in the past 6 years.

There are still some people out there that just take the easy way out though and we received a call from a monk and the Huay To Temple.

This one was tragic but also cute. Upon being dropped off at the gate of the temple, the monk told us that all 5 of the pups just crowded together and sat in one place. They were not wandering around, they just stayed together. I would say that they were trying to stay warm but it is really hot in Thailand this time of year.

They were probably just really scared.

These pups are extremely young and they immediately were open to being handled by humans. They were quite hungry as pups tend to be and it was really adorable because some of them were too small to eat out of the dog bowls properly.

Even though we are really struggling at the moment to accommodate all the dogs we currently have, we will do everything that we can to look over them. I think the monks were hoping that we were going to take them away but we simply do not have the space for them and it is unlikely that this is going to change anytime soon.

We are hopeful that their very cute faces will help to get some attention and maybe get them adopted but puppies are always a dangerous thing to allow someone to adopt, especially if they are a first-time adopter. There is a big difference between coming and handling a pup for a little while at a shelter or a temple ground than it is to have it at your house. Puppies are a lot of work and most people don't seem to really understand this. Unless you are extremely lucky you are likely going to have a future filled with things being chewed on and things getting peed on at least for 18 months or so. A lot of people don't understand this and this is why most animal-rescues and animal-shelters all around the world have a quite thorough vetting process before adoption is allowed.

The worst thing that can happen in these situations is that a person will get all excited about adopting a puppy, raise it for 4-6 months, the dog gets used to having a human caretaker, then that person re-abandons them. This is worse than them never getting adopted in the first place because with dogs just like it is with humans "ignorance is bliss." These outdoor temple dogs have always lived outdoors and therefore they don't know what they are missing. Give them a nice comfy bed for a few months though, and now you have broken their cute little hearts.

It would be wonderful if these puppies lives could just be about sleeping, playing, and eating, just like most human babies' lives are. I sometimes wish that these temples had CCTV not so we could bring the puppies back to whoever dumped them, but so that we could go give them a talking down to and at least have them explain themselves. As I have said in the past it is an unspoken rule in Thailand that if you drop an animal off at a temple they will take care of it for you, but in return you are not obligated to financially support that temple for as long as a dog normally lives. This seems like a fair trade-off to me but given that most temples are dangerously low on funds at all times as well, I seriously doubt that the thousands of people who regularly drop their dogs off here are actually fulfilling their end of the bargain. That doesn't seem very much in line with Karma though, does it?
