Helping more hungry dogs and cats in Krabi!
We recently had a bit of a fundraising push and it was reasonably successful. It was a Black Friday thing where we asked for people to think about treating some unfortunate dogs and cats to the gift of food this holiday season, and thankfully many people decided that this was a good idea.
It wasn't a huge amount of donations but that is something that is fortunate about where we operate in the world. Things are cheap in Thailand especially ever since we scored a deal with a pet food distributor where they will sell us their goods at cost.

I will admit that we did take these pictures to intentionally pull at the heartstrings of pet lovers out there. But it wasn't all devious. One of the number one hardships of animals here in Krabi, the rest of Thailand, as well as the rest of the world, is likely lack of access to something so basic as food.

I don't know how anyone can look at these gorgeous faces and not feel compelled to give them something to eat.
At Krabi Animal Welfare our number 1 goal is to push for sterilization, and our number 2 goal is to ensure that all cats and dogs (and the occasional monkey or any other animal) has enough to eat.

One thing that is probably obvious is that people tend to care a lot more about puppies or kittens than they do about grown up dogs and cats and while we will take any sort of care that we can get, this enthusiasm towards puppies is actually a big part of the problem. People will get puppies without considering that it is actually quite difficult and time-consuming to raise a dog and when the going gets tough and the dog pooped on the floor and chewed on your sofa again, that is when a lot of people drop these animals off at temples or drop them off in the middle of nowhere in order to get them out of their lives.
This is so heartbreaking when we see it because the animals are very confused and probably sad and scared as well.

We do what we can to try to ease this suffering and this holiday season we have been having a bunch of fun with these holiday bowls that we have been giving out to the dogs. Cats are much more finicky than dogs and even if they are very hungry they will still refuse to eat most of what is in that coconut husk bowl. I am sure any cat owners out there know exactly what I am talking about.
We have been making good progress in Krabi, but there is always more that can be done. We wont and cant stop if we are ever to make a real push to solve the problem of stray animal population in the region. It starts with education about the importance of sterilization and it continue with a nice bowl of food.
