Making dog bowls out of just about anything
For many of the dogs that we visit, they don't really have assigned bowls that they eat out of. Many of them don't have a receptacle at all because the monks just put food on the floor for them at the temples and if they are homeless wanderers they are probably hand-fed scraps or if things get bad they take food out of a trash can (we try to prevent the last thing as much as possible.)
But it is kind of amusing to me that sometimes the bowls are made out of just whatever happened to be around and this latest one, which we have used many times before it something that is in great abundance for free here in Krabi, Thailand.
The people who sell coconut things on the beach always have a bunch of broken open coconuts and these husks are actually quite perfect for temporary bowls. We like to use them at our shelter as well because the world has enough plastic in it already, don't you think?
on of our monk friends finds it very amusing at the agility of one of the dogs he looks after and because of this he puts the dog's meals on top of, well I don't actually know what that is!
The best way to hand out our special chicken treats though, is by hand. While I do not recommend that regular people do this with dogs you do not know because you can get bit, we are familiar with these dogs and they trust us so we don't need to be worried. If you feel compelled to feed a stray dog your leftover chicken, it is best to just put it on the ground and let them take it. While you would not want to eat "ground chicken" I can assure you, a dog has no issue with that!
Our fluffy friends will eat chicken wherever but if you are giving them kibbles, I think that it kind of goes without saying that putting it on stone walkways like this one would be a bit mean.
While we would like to find permanent homes for all of these lovely guys and gals, we are realistic and know that this is unlikely to happen especially in a country like Thailand that is estimated to have up to 1.6 million homeless dogs.
We do what we can for them as often as we can and so do other organizations that are located around Thailand and around the world.
They will eat food out of almost anything. In addition to coconuts we have used frisbees, paper plates, serving trays, and even just on the ground. The important thing is that they get the food that they need, right?
