Serious outbreak of mange discovered at small local temple in Thailand
The thing that is so tragic about mange is that it is so easily preventable and treatable. It is by pure lack of knowledge that this skin infestation is allowed to spread so quickly because people simply don't understand that a cheap edible medication can not only cure this problem, but prevent it from returning for several months.
If the infestation is left uncorrected though it will quickly spread to all other dogs in the population
Mange doesn't often kill dogs, but it does make their lives very uncomfortable because their entire body is constantly itchy due to microscopic parasites that are using their body as a food farm.
When we were alerted about a mange outbreak in a small temple in Krabi Noi, we sprung into action to take this on before it spread to all the other dogs there.
you may ask yourself why it is that this problem with the one dog would go for so long without being so much as addressed? Well, that is because this is Thailand. The people are not stupid at all but dogs with all their fur missing have been a part of everyone's lives for all their lives. They never were taught what the hell it is, or that it can easily be transferred to the other dogs. Until the fur drops out the assumption is that only the one dog is affected but that is not true at all. These microscopic parasites will jump from one dog to the next or even one species to the next. Some dogs are more resilient than others but when we inspected the other dogs at the temple they were all in some level of infestation as well.
Some of the dogs were very young and this is when they are most vulnerable to develop long-term skin issues because of it such as scarring and wounds that simply will not heal without treatment.
The good news is that the treatment, if done in edible form, is extremely easy to administer. If you attempt to accomplish this via a bath, it is possible, but probably making more trouble for yourself than anything else because the shampoo wears off in effectiveness in just a few days. The medication prevents reinfestation for months!
When we came along we are careful to not be accusing or condescending to the monks. They didn't go to medical school and aren't even supposed to be on the internet, so it is perfectly understandable that they wouldn't know about this. We took the time to teach them though and the hope here is that they will let other monks know about this in the future as well since nearly every temple in Thailand (probably all of them) have some level of stray dog population that has skin problems and parasite infestations.
With a little bit of care and compassion, all of these dogs are going to have full coats again in the near future. It takes a while but the medication such as Bravecto, has been effective as far as I have seen nearly 100% of the time.
Depending on where you live it is only a couple of dollars a dose as well. So if you see a dog that looks like the ones above where you live, see if you can get Bravecto or any other edible medication that contains fluralaner. This is a generic medication and will be inexpensive if you search for it or ask a veterinarian for it by chemical name.
