The story of a puppy's survival
A dog that was named Nong Kao by locals was an unsterilized female street dog in Krabi. She had people that would give her food and water but she had no home. One day Nong Kao disappeared and some of the locals went to go find her. Turns out she had her puppies in a place she felt was safe that was in a construction site.
Unfortunately when we came upon this, 3 of the 4 puppies had died. We do not know why or how, but we were going to make certain the last one had the best chance at life we could offer.
This pup was too young to be afraid, but it appears as though Nong Kao isn't the best mother in the world because she is nowhere to be found. The last surviving pup was a lot better off that you would expect for a puppy that has been abandoned but we set to work to make sure that this pup got all the chance at life that was possible.
Then something wonderful happened. We put out the word locally that this pup needed a home and someone in the local community decided not just to take the pup, but to take mom as well. This almost never happens in the animal-rescue world and it is fantastic that it has happened this time.
This cute little squeaker isn't going to have to worry about where the next meal is coming from, or about where to sleep, or whether or not they will be consumed by parasites. They are going to have a good life and we are very grateful for the adopters for going this not for us, but for the animals.
It remains to be seen if the pup's mom is going to be interested in raising her but we are hopeful that will be the case. But now that there are a human family involved even if Nong Kao decides she isn't going to help out, we have that alternative prepared for as well.
Most dogs in Thailand never even know what it is like to have a toy but this pup already has several. We got really lucky with this family stepping forward to look after both dogs and we are really thankful for them doing so. They have asked to remain anonymous and we are going to respect their wishes.
While this story has a happy ending, there are so many that do not. This construction site story is quite common in Thailand where the transient workers will look after dogs while they are there but as soon as the project wraps up the dogs are left behind. I do not fault them for this. We are just happy that someone is looking after the dogs while they are there in town.
