[Esp-Eng] Mi encuentro con Mucuchíes, el perro venezolano / My meeting with Mucuchíes, the Venezuelan dog

Yo sabía que en el estado Mérida, en los andes de Venezuela, vive un perro que se considera raza autóctona del país, pero no esperaba encontrármelos, fue toda una sorpresa conocerlos.

I knew that in the state of Mérida, in the Andes of Venezuela, there is a dog that are considered an autochthonous breed of the country, but I didn't expect to find them, it was a surprise to meet them.

Por motivo de trabajo yo había viajado a Mérida, era la primera vez que iba allí y en un día libre hice un paseo por varios lugares del páramo, entre ellos el Monumento al Perro Nevado y la famosa capilla de Juan Félix Sánchez.

Because of work I had traveled to Mérida, it was the first time I was going there and on a free day I took a tour through various places in the moor, including the Monument of Nevado Dog and the famous chapel of Juan Félix Sánchez.

Luego de salir de la ciudad hacia las montañas, el primer lugar en el que nos detuvimos fue el Monumento al Perro Nevado, el cual se construyó en honor al perro del Libertador Simón Bolívar. La obra representa la entrega del perro de raza Mucuchíes a Bolívar.

After leaving the city towards the mountains, the first place we stopped was the Monument of Nevado Dog, which was built in honor of the dog of the Liberator Simón Bolívar. The work represents the delivery of the Mucuchíes breed dog to Bolívar.

La historia cuenta que durante su lucha independentista, Bolívar pasó por la población de Mucuchíes, allí lo albergó un campesino que tenía un perro que le gustó, entonces antes de irse el campesino le mandó con su hijo un cachorro de esa raza.

The story goes that during his independence struggle, Bolívar passed through the town of Mucuchíes, where he was housed by a peasant who had a dog that he liked, so before leaving the peasant sent him with his son a puppy of that breed.

La placa que se encuentra allí dice lo siguiente sobre este monumento:
“Conmemora la entrega a Bolívar del perro Nevado por el niño Juan José Pino a pedido de su padre Don Vicente Pino y el nombramiento del indio Tinjaca como edecán del perro, hecho ocurrido en junio de 1813, según la leyenda histórica de Don Tulio Febres Cordero.

The plaque found there says the following about this monument:
“It commemorates the delivery to Bolívar of the dog Nevado by the boy Juan José Pino at the request of his father Don Vicente Pino and the appointment of the Tinjaca Indian as aide-de-camp of the dog, which occurred in June 1813, according to the historical legend of Don Tulio Febres Cordero.

Este relato nos cuenta de un fiel perro de la raza Mucuchíes y su edecán quienes compartieron con el Libertador hasta el 24 de junio de 1821 en la Batalla de Carabobo, cuando el perro Nevado muere de un lanzazo al atacar a la caballería realista como una fiera indómita que al calor de la batalla se abalanza contra los enemigos de su amo.

This story tells us about a faithful dog of the Mucuchíes breed and his aide who shared with the Liberator until June 24, 1821 at the Battle of Carabobo, when the Nevado dog died from a spear when attacking the royalist cavalry like a beast Indomitable that in the heat of battle rushes against the enemies of its master.

El Libertador lo despide ‘con una lágrima de pesar profundo… el hermoso perro Nevado era digno de aquella lágrima’…”

The Liberator dismisses him ‘with a tear of deep regret… the beautiful Nevado dog was worthy of that tear’… ”

Esta raza de canes se cree que fue producto de la mezcla de ejemplares de mastines y ovejeros que trajeron los conquistadores españoles a Venezuela. Del cruce de esos perros nació el Mucuchíes, grande, de aspecto fuerte, con pelaje denso, prácticamente hecho para la montaña y para ser un guardián.

This breed of dogs is believed to have been the product of the mixture of mastiffs and sheep dogs that the Spanish conquerors brought to Venezuela. From the crossing of these dogs, the Mucuchíes was born, large, strong-looking, with dense fur, practically made for the mountains and to be a guardian.

Su vinculación con Bolívar hizo que el 31 de agosto de 1964, el Mucuchíes fuera declarado raza típica venezolana. Este reconocimiento se hizo además para tratar de preservarlo porque no había muchos ejemplares.

His connection with Bolívar caused that on August 31, 1964, the Mucuchíes was declared a typical Venezuelan breed. This recognition was also made to try to preserve it because there were not many specimens.

Luego de conocer este monumento y un poco de la historia de esta raza de perros, seguimos el paseo por el páramo merideño y llegamos al pueblo de San Rafael de Mucuchíes para visitar la capilla de Juan Félix Sánchez, hecha totalmente de piedra por este famoso personaje de la cultura local.

After knowing this monument and a little of the history of this breed of dogs, we continue the tour through the Merida moorland and we arrive at the town of San Rafael de Mucuchíes to visit the Juan Félix Sánchez chapel, made entirely of stone by this famous man of the local culture.

Fue allí mientras tomaba fotos del lugar que caminé un poco más allá y vi a un señor que estaba en la vía vendiendo unos cachorros.

It was there while I was taking photos of the place that I walked a little further and I saw a man who was on the road selling some puppies.

Al ver que me acercaba emocionada para verlos de cerca, me dijo muy amablemente: “son Mucuchíes, aproveche y llévese uno”, que estaban baratos dijo (no recuerdo el precio), de verdad era una lástima que no pudiese llevarme uno, pero yo vivo en apartamento y en una ciudad y estos perros no son para ese ambiente, viven mejor en las montañas, al aire libre. Entonces lo único que pude llevarme fue una hermosa foto con estos lindos cachorros.

When he saw that I approached excited to see them up close, he said very kindly: "They are Mucuchíes, take advantage and take one", they were cheap, he said (I don't remember the price), it was really a pity that I couldn't take one, but I live in an apartment and in a city and these dogs are not for that environment, they live better in the mountains, outdoors. So the only thing I could take with me was a beautiful photo with these cute puppies.

Estos perros no son muy comunes de ver por ahí, por eso en el año 2008 el gobierno venezolano creó la Fundación Nevado con el objetivo de proteger y reproducir a esta especie, en ese momento sólo había 23 ejemplares en el país.

These dogs are not very common to see out there, so in 2008 the Venezuelan government created the Nevado Foundation with the aim of protecting and reproducing this species, at that time there were only 23 specimens in the country.

Luego, en el año 2014, se creó la Misión Nevado, un proyecto social también creado por el gobierno nacional para brindar atención veterinaria gratuita a los animales de compañía. Desde allí se desarrolla también un proyecto de preservación de la raza Mucuchíes, de la que actualmente hay menos de 400 ejemplares en el país, según datos de esta Misión.

Then, in 2014, the Nevado Mission was created, a social project also created by the national government to provide free veterinary care to companion animals. From there a project is also being developed to preserve the Mucuchíes breed, of which there are currently less than 400 specimens in the country, according to data from this Mission.

Cuando visité el teleférico de Mérida tiempo después, me mostraron en una parte de sus instalaciones un refugio donde tienen algunos ejemplares de la raza Mucuchíes y me dijeron que en Caracas tienen otro refugio también ubicado en el teleférico de la ciudad. Estos refugios pueden ser visitados para conocer de cerca al Mucuchíes, el perro venezolano.

When I visited the Mérida cable car some time later, they showed me in a part of their facilities a shelter where they have some specimens of the Mucuchíes breed and they told me that in Caracas they have another shelter also located in the cable car of the city. These shelters can be visited to get up close to the Mucuchíes, the Venezuelan dog.
