My First Sketchbook
I would’ve liked to put the image of my newly acquired sketchbook up first, seeing how it’s the title of this post, but opted out because it wasn’t as appealing. Instead, the cover image of this post is the sketchbook’s first creation. A cartoon; crypto-style. I thought of the captions first and thought it was funny, all I need now is a couple whales:
Zoom in, little more zoom, almost there.. Splash!
Here’s how it started:
Seeing so many talented artists here, I started following several of you and after seeing all the amazing pieces, I decided to try out a couple drawings myself. For those 2, I used a number 2 pencil, a mechanical pencil and an 8 pack of Play Mate colored pencils I got at the grocery store. I did creation #1 after I got these in the mail:
8b and 8 colored mechanical pencils
But that still doesn’t explain the title of this post. I’ve never had a sketchbook before, I read a lot of posts here where people mention their sketchbooks. So I did a quick search, peddled myself to a local art store and there it was:
Brand new, not a drawing in it, even says “sketchbook.” And $4 off...? “Sold.”
I learned those mechanical colored pencils are real fragile. Either that or I have a heavy hand but the lead seems to break quite easily. Definitely can’t use them with the lead more than one click out.
Now I’m weilding 8 colored pencils from the grocery store, the 8 Pack of mechanical pencils with lead that won’t stop breaking and a brand new sketchbook. After capturing what a couple whales might say to eachother for the first entry, I flipped the page and added a second:
part 1
part 2 - I like lettering and line work
three - so I’ll put some letters on those hands
Now just some more detail
And then I peddled to the art store for a second time. That place is like an amusement park, only better! Whatever you can think of, they have it and they have a lot of it. I took more notes, and continue to do so, from all of you, and upon exiting the art store for a second time, I had 2 paper stumps, a 2, 4 and 6b pencil, and a couple different pens: white gel, black gel. Black ballpoint and a black fine tip.
Quite a few tools to choose from now, this could get interesting. Day 1 with these new pens and I couldn’t think of what to do first so I just started making shapes without an intentional direction, hoping an idea would manifest. It looked like this:
finally, I got an idea
Although I’m not sure when I’ll be able to post this idea as ‘finished,’ the beginning has been fun. My eyes get confused as I try to follow the lines and remember starts and finishes, over and unders. It’s fun! Hopefully it gets real loud and colorful. I have several pencils I can shade with now, that should help with depths. Here’s the start:
your guess is as good as mine what happens next
Thanks a lot for continuing to follow and support me. As I get more familiar with Steem, I’ll continue to add material for you. Along with art work, I look forward to sharing some music projects on here, too. I also like to write, record videos, or at least pretend I can, memorize poetry and - and - To Be Continued...
nice sketchbook..
Nicely done. Finaly your new post, youll have purchased the pens. Awesome keep sketching as time goes it will improve and keep posting.
Thanks for staying interested sir, much appreciated.
Your welcome, waiting for your next art to complete and check that one.
All I need is a couple of whales, haha. That's what we all need, beautifully done there, there's humour in your art. I was wondering how many times you had to visit the store, haha. The blending on the hand is really beautiful with a nice colour contrast. GIFTED. You have our support, keep posting and I'd love to see your writings and videos.
..just a couple, that’ll be just fine! Ha. I will, and I look forward to your writings and photos also. Thank you.
Awesome, I was waiting for a new drawing from you. They all look good and unique. The hands with the inked mention...wow, they look 3D! I am glad that you started back a new sketch book! Keep going, you really have a great talent. Can't wait to see happens next for the drawing you are doing, thanks for sharing. Now I want to go to thw art shop too!
I understand now. I had no idea how valuable those places are, whatever it is you’re thinking you need, they have an abundance of it. Thank you @pegarissimo.
:-D. Work is finally done, I took the time to re-read your post and I just think it's great. It reminds my first trips where I had to get all my many differents pencils, ahhh...fuelled me instanly with ideas and just couldn't wait to draw! I always over do it after that as I make too many drawings in a too short time, but then I try to retake the good parts of what I did and then I take the real time to make a better piece.
Just by reading your post, the small details into it like he pedaling, seems to have made me relive all that a bit (thanks!) I really enjoy following you, I saw thousands and thousands of posts, somehow you stood out of the crowd.
I’m really glad you think so @pegarissimo, thank you for those kind words! You said ‘fueled with ideas,’ well said. I’m already thinking of other tools and supplies I saw there that I could use now. Round 3 at the art store is brewin’
By the way you got skillz
Thanks @nickall, I’m glad you think so. Welcome to Steem, nice to have you! I just checked out your page, any friend of EOS is a friend of mine.
