Barn Owl - Drawitbetter Contest Entry

INTRODUCTION

Owls are a nocturnal bird of prey with large, circle and black eyes, an angular beak, and in most cases a loud hooting call. I will share now how to draw one of the extensively distributed species of owl and most general of all birds which is a BARN OWL.

Barn owls are a predatory nocturnal bird.They have heart-shaped faces which makes them more attractive and not too big black eyes. This kind of owl is having a very drastic hearing.Where they can locate their food by sounds and hunt most of the ground animals like small mammals.

Most of the barn owls' nest are located mainly in some buildings, tree cavities and any kind of caves. That's why barn owls are widespread species of owl.

You can found Barn owl almost everywhere in the world except polar and desert regions, Asia north of the Himalayas, most of Indonesia, and some Pacific islands.

First prepare the materials :)

• pencil
• eraser
• marker - I used here 0.5 pilot point hi-tech that's the only material I have :)
• black color pencil for some shading purposes if needed :)

Let's go! For the procedure guys :).
This is the easiest procedure even you are not that professional artist like me you can make this..

Procedure

This is the most important and my favorite part of my post sharing what I've learned and searched for some tutorials online and I hope you can do it also :)

Make a pattern and sketch

---

• Make a circle and a pattern for the face. We will use this pattern for the whole face sketch from eyes, beak and feathered face.The pattern is just our guidelines so we will erase it once we completed the final sketch :)

• After the small circle for the face, next, you need to make one more medium size of the circle on the right side. We will use this for the body of the owl.

• For the pattern, we don't need to make it harder. Just only a light lines so that later we can erase and remove it easily.

• Connect the small circle to the medium size of the circle. This connection is the neck of the owl.

• We need also to add a half oval shape for the body of the owl.

• Another small size of half oval shape for the last small part of the wing.

• Now make the sketch for the eyes and beak :). Just make a simple sketch of eyes. Small circle shade it blacks then make a smaller circle and leave it a white color.White color is the reflection of the eyes from the light. Make the eyes detailed as you can.

• Barn owls are known for having a heart-shaped faces :), now we need to make by using the pattern lines in the face.

• You can make some additional detail on the face of the owl :)

• You can make the sketch of whatever part of the owl, as you wish or what part you are comfortable to make first. Now I make the feet after the face. Make the sharp nails and add some feature of the feet as you wish so that you can make your art more detailed.

After the feet, next, I make the sketch of the wing and some details of it. First, make the main lines and the shape pattern to get the clear picture of the same.

Now after the wings details we can erase the patterns and guidelines. Then make the body sketch to make our owl handsome one :)

Voila !! The sketch is done :) congrats!

Now mark the lines by using 0.50 vpoint pilot :)

This time you can mark whatever the part you want :)

After the marking, you can now enhance the picture and make the lines more detailed and darker :) and voila! Your work will be fine as what I've done or more.
