A Musical Tribute

in #dsound7 years ago (edited)

This song "Before I'm Gone" is a tribute to some musical influences I've had along the way. The first verse mentions some of these songwriters-George Harrison, my favorite Beatle, John Denver, a childhood influence, and the legendary Bob Marley.

The middle verse however, focuses on Hawaii's Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, or "IZ" as many called him, who had perhaps, one of the most amazing voices in history. I read a story about a music critic who went to one of his concerts to write a review on his IZ's show, but as soon as IZ started to sing, this critic was so overwhelmed with emotion he couldn't hold back his tears. He was a little embarrassed, but when he looked around, he saw that everyone else was crying as well.

This story really stood out to me. It's amazing how music goes right to the heart, and can connect people from all over the world. All of these men are gone now but their music carries on and on. I wrote this song expressing the hope that maybe my music would connect with others as well.

If you haven't heard of IZ, check out this song, and the celebration of his life at the end, and check out @DSound as well. Some excellent music is going up every day.

Lyrics:

Harrison sang his guitar weeps and Denver said it was an old, old friend
And Marley brought us Jamaican sun, and we hear their voices again and again

Do they know they make us cry, do they know they make us high?
Do know they bring us the sun? Now they are gone, now they are gone

A fat man and his ukulele stood out like a shining light
Always helping an island of people make it through those lonely nights

Does he know he makes us cry, does he know he makes us high?
Does he know he brings us the sun, now he is gone, now he is gone

Now I know deep inside it doesn’t matter whether anyone knows my name
But knowing this doesn’t keep me from dreaming and I can say without shame

That I’d love to make you cry, I'd love to make you high
I'd love to bring you the sun, before I'm gone

Bob Marley is a huge influence to me as well.

Is somewhere over the rainbow originally IZ's song? I've heard so many covers and remakes I had no idea who the artist was until I saw it in your post.

You're a great songwriter listening to your lyrics, keep it up!

No it goes way all the way back to the movie "the wizard of oz". The other influences are songwriters, but IZ captured me more with his voice. Thanks for your kind words.

Dude, this is so original, thanks for giving me an idea as I'm planning to write a tribute song to people who have influenced me as well. I like your strumming, its pleasing to the ears.

Awesome tribute. Love the song bro.
