Knowing Venezuelan traditional-popular music. Today's song: The Jumping (El Saltarín)
The song that we are now going to hear is called The Jumping (El Saltarín) by maestro Antonio Carrillo (1892-1962). It is a type of popular Venezuelan instrumental music similar to the European center polka. The polka is a popular dance that appeared in Europe around 1830 and became popular in Prague since 1835. With the passage of time, it became a very popular dance in the 19th century. The polka was no more than a musical composition in two-beat or pulses that was accompanied by a dance in couples that made quick movements and where they made clear their skills as dancers.
As for the author of this instrumental music for strings, Maestro Carrillo was a Venezuelan musician and composer and one of the greatest exponents of typical Larense music, performer of bow instruments, plectrum and piano, composer, instrumentalist and director of many musical groupings. Carrillo was an exceptional mandolinist because of the technicality required for his opportune portamentos, staccatos and the sonority of the double, triple and quadruple strings. In his music for mandolin you can also appreciate characteristic and exclusive punches (or straw) that made his execution a personal and unique style.
On this occasion, El saltarín is played by Maestro Edy Marcano who is one of the Venezuelan violinist with exceptional conditions for this instrument. Edy Marcano and the musicians that accompany him on this occasion, at some time, were part of the Opus 4 Group, they are: Juan Rojas in the Cuatro, José Vicent Gonzales in the Guitar and José Mota in the Electric bass. For this recording I had the honor of being invited by this group and I excelled in a small participation with the mandolin.
Hoping it will please you all
