"nullinit" - Modular Live Techno Performance on DTube
I tend to bounce back and forth between creating ambient and techno tracks, sometimes beginning in one genre before finishing in the other. In many ways, they are complimentary but also serve to scratch different itches in my composition agenda. I'm very much hoping to mix the two on my debut full length, but that's for another day.
Today, we are techno-ing out super hard on the Noise Engineering Bin Seq and SSF Entity, improvising different gate lengths and bass rhythms on the fly while the Mutable Marbles provides time sync'd variation. One of my favorite simple tricks is employed here ... I'm using a long LFO on Maths to cycle a 3-way switch between a fairly straightforward "established" snare pattern on the Eloquencer and some dense random riffing via Marbles. In case it wasn't obvious, this multiple output source of "informed" randomization has become an essential piece of my rig, offering recurring (or completely off the wall) elements of unpredictability to my patches. I'm also using the Three Sisters to create unusual LFO patterns from one of the random CV streams Marbles is creating collaterally. I'm taking these interdependent CV streams and distributing them all over the patch (the filter pumps on the bassline are a particularly good example) ... creating enough variation to (hopefully) keep the pattern interesting as we hammer on it. In the end, we land on a fully Erbe-Verb'd out drone that would otherwise be difficult to pick out of the dense mix.
