Episode 63 - Digital Entrepreneurship During the 90’s Tech Bubble with Jeff Berwick

in #dtube7 years ago (edited)

My guest today is Jeff Berwick, Founder of www.StockHouse.com, Founder of The Dollar Vigilante, Host of Anarchast Podcast and creator of the largest Anarchist conference Anarchapulco.

What you are going to LEARN in this episode:

  1. What is was like to be a Digital Entrepreneur during the 90’s tech bubble
  2. Why Jeff started The Dollar Vigilante and what it’s purpose is
  3. Why working “crappy” jobs is better than going to high school
  4. How Bitcoin and blockchains are changing the way that digital communities are being created
  5. Why Anarchists should become entrepreneurs

A lot of us are just now learning about and trying to become digital entrepreneurs, but my guest Jeff Berwick has been one for over 20 years. Back in the 90’s, while working at a bank, he created the website www.StockHouse.com which had ~20,000 subscribers. The site was basically the MarketWatch.com of Canada. After growing to 250 employees in 12 countries, Jeff experienced the Tech Bubble crash and found himself with only 12 employees all in Canada.

After reading The Creature from Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin, Jeff decided to sell StockHouse.com and travel the world to find economic truths. He had figured out that the government’s money (aka fiat money) was a fraud and a ponzi scheme and dedicated his life to helping others see this truth.

In 2011, Jeff was introduced to Bitcoin and it changed his life. Not only was Bitcoin a global currency, it was also not controlled by a nation state and was limited in supply. Jeff quickly realized that this mean the Freedom of Money could once again be had by the general populous. He created a successful economic and investing newsletter called The Dollar Vigilante to help others understand the fraud of paper currency.

Since then, Jeff has created the Anarchast podcast as well as the “world’s largest Anarchist Conference” in Anarchapulco (where I will be speaking in Feb 2017).

Networking with like-minded people is so important and I highly recommend you check out the Anarchapulco conference. Sign up through my affiliate link and receive 10% off the listed price.

Until next time…Keep Building Freedom!

One of the most incredible things I’m realizing about Steemit is that, whether intended or not, its decentralization combined with its acceptance of the concept of free markets (actually free, not crony-capitalist statist tripe) for beneficial, peaceful, and non-coercive interactions between people, makes Steemit an almost perfect platform for keeping together a community of libertarians, anarcho-capitalists, minarchists, objectivists, some free market mutualist-anarchist types, and everyone from the Liberty movement.

The people who fit the ideological persuasions listed above tend to be extremely concerned with the importance and dignity of every, single person as their own ends as opposed to all other ideologies which seem to accept, to one degree or another, the “sacrifice” of some individuals for the benefit of some other group.

That can sometimes make it hard to keep the liberty-minded types of people together as a community because of the heavy value they put on an individuals’ freedom to choose how, when, and with whom to associate.

Steemit, uniquely, I believe, allows for the forming of communities that are more fluid than elsewhere, while still maintaining the underlying sense of community that is an important part of building out and spreading the message of freedom to the larger population, and providing a place for people who love freedom to group together, voluntarily, and feel freely exchange ideas and share of themselves without fear of punishment by some iteration of the State.

Posts and links to podcasts like this are, I think, exactly what the “movement” (such as it is) needs!

thank you so much for the kind words! My goal is to create a platform and share a perspective of building freedom. Glad you like it :)

Can't wait to listen to this one. These podcasts keep getting better!

Jeff sounds like an incredible guest. 20 years ago you would have had to have been self taught with most web design, not to mention development work.

Ok, just listened to this podcast. Jeff Berwick is hilarious! He is so nonchalant about hating school and cherishing hands on experience. Love his global spirit and his awakening while traveling abroad. Getting into Bitcoin at $3!!!! Dude is someone to listen to if for his insights on what's on the horizon alone.

srsly, he was on the leading edge of the interwebs! Can't wait for his conference!

Amazed at the quality of guests. Great stories and experiences.

(Tearing through your collection of episodes from the start. Glad they're getting posted on Steemit too!)

thank you :) I love using DTube to post these on Steemit. Love that project and proud that they receive part of the author rewards. Great projects get funded on Steemit.

The experience, that can bring us, entrepreneurs like Jeff Berwick, is of utmost importance for the new entrepreneurs, like us. Due to its great experience in different lines and companies, even understanding the early age of bitcoin, which would be the currency of the future, really an entrepreneur worthy of listening, it will be very useful this podcasts

20 years ago you would have had to have been self taught with most web design, not to mention development work.

Sure, but 20 years ago our websites had real pizzazz.. real razzle dazzle... pinache! ;)

looks like a great page to me!

I wish I could say my design skills have improved since then haha

Yes!

Thanks, from a anarchist micro-entrepreneur. I'm going to go subscribe to your podcasts right now so I can hear what you have to say. Good night Netflix, hello liberty entrepreneurs!

Before listening, I think everyone should try to do something privately for profit, just to gain perspective. Since starting my own small thing, I have gained a greater appreciation for my main gig. Just the few thousand dollars a year have helped me learn more about how the market works. It's an eye opener, and a lot of fun. I encourage all my friends to use something they already have to make themselves a few bucks.

i love the idea of a "micro-entrepreneur". You don't have to build a big business to have a big impact. Start small and try to turn one of your hobbies in to a profitable side business.

At first it was an outlet to practice and develop my trade. I like my job, so I don't have a problem doing it as a side gig too. I think my total equipment cost was like $1200 over the course of 3 years to get what I actually have now, and it's all paid for itself maybe 10X now, five years later.
