Normie Talk - What's The Difference Between The Steem Alliance Foundation, The DAO and The Steem Business Alliance?

in #dtube5 years ago (edited)

And do we really need all three? ... YES! We do need all three in my opinion, let me tell you why.

"Normie Talk" - an idea that may go nowhere...

One of the things I have heard most often since being on the working group of the @steemalliance is the confusion that the Community Foundation (which the Steem Alliance group is trying to help the community build), The Steem DAO (worker proposal system being built by blocktrades) and The Steem Business Alliance (@steemba) are all essentially the same thing and therefore, all three are not needed.

I believe this confusion comes from the three sort of making a public appearance around the same time, even though The Steem Business Alliance had been in the works since November and I assume Blocktrades had been planning some sort of worker proposal system for a bit as well. BUT the community heard about them all within a few weeks, and they all do three serve similar purposes, while being vastly different in their scopes as well as how they will work exactly.

I felt it might be beneficial to just explain my understanding of the three, their differences and how they all could work together in an easy to understand way. You know... Normie Talk.

This is NOT an extremely in-depth and technical look into the projects. It’s just an overview of what the ideas behind them are, in an easy to understand manner. You know, like we are having a beer and I am explaining it to you ;)

I hope this helps a few grasp the idea of the projects and see how they all will benefit the community vastly, while complimenting each other quite well.

Want More Info?

I am not a part of either the Steem Business Alliance or The Steem DAO, but have had the opportunity to discuss both projects with the individuals behind them, and this is just my personal understanding based on that.

Please see the individual projects for more detailed information

Town Hall Recordings That May Help

I had the pleasure of speaking with both projects (or representatives from the projects) on a few of the @steemalliance town hall meetings. These will give you more information from those individuals themselves, so please do have a listen (just be sure to fast forward through my ramblings and just get to the good stuff).

- Town Hall w/@starkerz from @oracle-d and one of the founders of The Steem Business Alliance

Detailed information for The Steem Business Alliance can be found on the @steemba blog, and look out for an update coming this week.

- Town Hall w/@blocktrades who is developing The Steem DAO (worker proposal system)

Updates for the Steem.DAO can be found on the @blocktrades blog. They are already in test phase of the UI and it looks like they are making some really great progress.

Have you registered to vote yet?

If you do have interest in the Community Foundation that the @steemalliance group is helping to establish, be sure to register to vote.. or you won't be able to vote in the upcoming election that will decide the structure of the foundation (as in- what it will look like, how it will work and who will be involved).

You only have until Thursday! You can register and read the structure proposals...

-------->>> HERE

What's Next?

As promised, I will be trying to work my way through the proposals to make them easy to explain and possibly showcase the differences. So, register to vote.. and then we have over a week to break them all down so we can all make informed decisions.

Any specific questions you would like to see answered?

This "Normie Talk" is an idea of explaining some things in an easy to understand way and in video format... if you think it is beneficial, let me know.. as well as what you would like to see covered in the future.

thanks for listening to me ramble...

Much Love and Steem On,

Justine

Another great vid, @llfarms. After reading up on the proposals put forward my preference would take the proposal put forward by @jackmiller and merge it with the Stars Align Project as presented by @aggroed. Do you think voting will allow taking some of one proposal and some of another?

Also, when you speak of projects being funded, is the source of that funding decided upon yet?

Thank you!

The teams have been encouraged to collaborate from the beginning, as well as it being stated that a proposal could come forward that says “Combine this one and that” or “have the WG pull from each” etc. (these were examples we have heard from the community). So that would be left to the community and those proposing specifically.

The foundation will need to become sustainable as far as funding is concerned, but there is a commit to seed the foundation from Steemit INC and Ned, if the community can get it done🙂

Shoot me if I understand this...

There are 3-4 groups, voting about something, talking about something, doing something...

However, from the outside, I have no idea what are the gains achieved after several months of being active?

I don't understand what are the obligations of those who participate, I don't understand how they can enforce their will, I have no clue how / why / what will be developed...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not super negative, I'm happy to see that there are still some enthusiasts willing to help but honestly - I don't understand.

And if it's not possible to clearly explain to someone in 1-3 sentences (*typical elevator pitch) - maybe it's not realistic :(

This is like some deja vu for me, as my country once had something called "samoupravljanje". It failed miserably.

It depends on what project you are referring to, as I’m discussing three separate ones in the video.. so I’ll try to break down each ones “goal” in a couple sentences and see if that helps;

The Community Foundation (more info at @steemalliance) - To push Steem to the mainstream market by helping the community take ownership and have a voice to help fill the gaps we see today.

The Steem.DAO (more info @blocktrades) - An automated worker proposal system where anyone can apply for funding (through an interface) and if enough stake holders approve, funding is granted.

The Steem Business Alliance (more info at @steemba) - To onboard businesses as well as act as a landing place for them, to show them the ins and outs Of Steem and help them be successful.

All three have the similar goal to increase the value of the STEEM token, therefore improving the chain as a whole.

And yes, many other Blockchains do have a foundation as well as a type of DAO... Steem will just be the first blockchain foundation to be built by the community itself.

I hope that helps! If not, let me know 😉

Also, if you aren’t familiar With the idea of this community foundation at all, this may help;

Foundations are not uncommon among large open source projects. Monzilla is one, if memory serves, for example. It facilitates development. A communications portal if you will.

Actually to me now, i am still even yet to know much about the steem alliance stuff

Ok, maybe Start with this simple explanation of the Steem Alliance foundation

https://steemit.com/dtube/@llfarms/sipggsqy

Then start reading the Proposal Questionairies on this post

https://steemit.com/steem/@steemalliance/6-days-left-have-you-registered-to-vote

To get an idea of what structures are being discussed.

Just an FYI
It's "Steem Proposals" not DAO please don't help DAO be a thing. The interfaces (at least ours) will NOT say DAO.
It will be "Steem Proposals" so for the sake of the users let's keep it intuitively named "Steem Proposals"

Oh goodness.. I was instructed (by the one that shall not be named) to start using only the “Steem DAO” name 😂 now I’m just stuck in the middle Jarvie!

I do think names are important here, and it’s why I kept also referring to it as “the worker proposal system”... we really should get better at this.

Hey btw, are you coming to Austin?

I have some other commitments that week but yeah DAO is completely meaningless... ask 100 people and 99 of them won't have a clue what it means. Steem Proposals a majority of them will at least get a sense of what it is. That's called inutitive naming. And this is why language matters. Because if we use one system we have to do way more education and problem solving and convincing that we're not weird. Use steem proposals and other non weird and inutitive wording and people are like... "oh yeah cool. I get it." Language is marketing.

But we are on a blockchain where we use a cringy non intuitive name "Witness" for a block producer.

So my hope AND guess is it will end up being steem proposal regardless of that person wanting it to be DAO ... it's just not going to happen unless he really pushes it and for what good. If steemit is trying to impress other blockchain developers i get it... but I sure hope that this is not the main audience of steem.

Also our system will be the same "Steem Proposals"
We created the majority of it a while back but then it has been delayed in coming out so we stopped work on it.

THANK YOU for another informtive video and all the links you provided! Also, a big THANK YOU for the YouTube-version of the video, as Dtube seldom works for me! 🙌

Thank you 😊 🤗

explanations are needed, thank you for trying to do so.

how do you record this videos, do you edit them in something?

Hey thank you!! Most of my videos are just one take and I try not to screw up.

BUT I’ve been playing with a program called “open shot” and was actually able cut out two parts where I just messed up. It’s really easy to use and has a lot of features, especially for combining a lot of different clips into one video. I haven’t tried using it in that way yet, but I watched a tutorial and it was really easy.

I hope it helps!

just checked it out, did not find a normalize for audio. but if you click on the clip, it will open properties and i see there is an audio "slider". not sure if you could go above 1, but you could try to see how it sounds.
In these 2 videos audio sounds fine, no noise, but i probably woke up half of the neighborhood when i played something else after it :D it is a bit quiet.

edit:
i could never do the one take 10 minutes video of me speaking :D even in serbian. well i can't do it for 30 sec :D
