Robert Service was born in England and emigrated to Canada as a young man. He spent much of his time in the Canadian west and north where he amassed the knowledge he put into his legendary tales of the Yukon.
The Yukon is one of the northern territories of Canada where we truly do earn our reputation for it being cold and rugged.

Gotta love Robert Service! And Hank Snow!. My Grandpa used to recite Robert Service poems by heart...and he took me to see a Hank Snow concert when I was 8 yrs old.
