Wildlife of Yucatan: unique footage of enormous swarm of locusts flying over our house
Hi there my Steemit friends and followers!
I have been thinking about making a video post for some time already as I have not used @dtube for ages and fortuitously, it was just yesterday that I happened to capture a very unique footage that I would like to share with you today.
The last day of 2018 began as yet another normal sunny day here in Yucatan and there were no signs at all that something very extraordinary was about to happen. But then, at about 1 PM local time, the whole sky got covered with a gigantic swarm made up by millions and millions of massive locusts.
They were sweeping over the town back and forth for hours until dawn. It is early morning here now and they seem to be gone or possibly just sleeping somewhere. We will see if they show up again today.
The locals said it is actually quite a rare natural phenomenon that only occurs once in three or four years so I guess I was very lucky to witness it. While it undoubtedly is a very cool spectacle for disinterested viewers, it is actually a disaster for local farmers and house owners as the locusts were eating down on literally every single plant and tree in the area. And they were pooping all over the place too of course - our swimming pool (just as anything else that was unprotected) is full of the insect´s feces now.
Let me show you some photos too.
Have you ever seen anything like this? Let me know in the comments below.
Happy New Year everyone! :)

Wow, that's incredible! You were really lucky that you were able to witness this, and thanks for sharing it with us. It's unfortunate for the farmers tough.. They must be having a very difficult time right now.
Oh yeah and not just them actually - it devastated gardens, backyards and pretty much everything with some trees or plants.
Wow, I can only imagine. It's a good thing that it only happens every few years then. How long did it last by the way? Is it still going on?
The swarm was hovering above (and eating) our neighborhood for some 5 hours, until the sunset. When I woke up in the morning the next day, they were gone but they actually just moved a few kilometers further to devastate another place. I don´t really know how long this whole rampage usually lasts or what happen to the locusts after that. But man, the size of the swarm was incredible. Talk about a nightmare stuff.
Na pohled zajímavé. Nechtěl bych však být farmářem, kterému sednou na pole.
No to teda. Jak to posedalo na strom, tak z něj po chvíli zbyly jen holé větve. Neskutečné.
Tomu věřím
Very cool footage! I have never seen anything like this before! :D
Thanks :) I think these things happen in warm climates only ;)
Yeah but I think I haven't seen it on TV either! :P
Never seen anything like this...very astonishing!
It was! Thanks for stopping by :)

I can hear you but to me, it was a pure fascination actually :) Incredible spectacle.
This reminds me of the land before time!
Haven´t seen that but I will. Thanks for the tip :)
wooooow no I have never seen anything like this in Panama! This looks like one of those apocalyptic phenomena, luckily for me I don't believe in God (only in the mighty Human who destroys everything!). Crazy stuff!!!
