Discussing And Demoing DTube With The Founder
I sit down with the founder and main developer of DTube Adrien aka @Heimindanger to talk about DTube diving into its origins and some big updates for what’s coming next!
I’ve been using DTube since I first joined Steem about a year and a half ago and I’ve loved it. It truly represents what a decentralized blockchain video hosting application should be and proves to be the perfect alternative to YouTube. Now with the new update, it can even utilize videos from YouTube and other sources to make the entire process seamless. I’m honored to get to share these cool new updates and insights into the beta new.d.tube with the legend @Heimindanger himself.

I don't like the idea of posting Youtube links ... it is feeding the enemy, feeding the monopoly!
Firstly, we will also support other big platform like Twitch, Vimeo, etc. So it won't truly feed into the monopoly.
Secondly, people who aren't afraid of getting youtube banned or demonetized (think like gaming/cooking channels) don't see much of a purpose in our IPFS upload. For them the fact that the videos 'go down' is super bad and pushes them away from dtube. If those people start using the free storage offered by YouTube, we will suddently be able to afford to keep good IPFS videos for longer, or more of them at least. And their video will keep loading (and keep on being monetized through blockchain)
Thirdly, STEEM is inherently very limited in terms of contents because of the restriction on 'original contents'. Allowing links is synonym to allowing non-original content, which means we won't technically feed youtube. I don't want to put our videos into YouTube's catalogue. I want YouTube's video inside our blockchain instead.
You have a good point and I agree with you 100%, these new features will accelerate the growth of Dtube and make it even better... it is way better for Dtube to have these features in many aspects ... it's just that YT cannot be trusted ... I think when you guys enable a sync with Bitchute and any other real YT alternatives (Bit.tube, PeerTube etc) we will have an option to retire YT for good, thus helping the organic growth of D.tube and all the other alternatives ...
I really think we should celebrate these changes and support you guys ...

It's great to see that the project is still being updated and innovating, especially since BitTube pooped the bed.
I think the fundamental problem remains, however: how do you incentivize people pinning their own or other peoples' videos on IPFS? Without that, there's tremendous storage costs and the videos can't stay up very long. Having videos disappear is a deal-breaker for most content creators.
For IPFS pinning / incentivization there already is a beta version of filecoin!
Honestly I don't think that even with incentivization it would work so well... It's not only storage, it's also encoding, and (a lot of) bandwidth. YT offers all that for free. Consumers aren't even aware videos have associated costs. For them it looks free.

What about allowing creators to allocate/pledge a (larger) percentage of their videos’ revenue to DTube in order to keep it pinned longer and defray DTube’s costs? Or allow fans of the creator’s video to pay/donate (in DTB or STEEM) for that?
Yes, people generally seem to have no idea how much transcoding, bandwidth and storage costs are. Maybe more education would help with that? YouTube is able to give all that for free by selling intrusive advertising, I think, which has terrible negative side effects (e.g.: censorship).
Yeah I feel that. With the new update I should hope that alleviates a lot of those concerns
@scottcbusiness, Definitely Dtube brought lot of value to Steem Blockchain no matter sometimes it had flaws but step by step this platform faced improvements and most importantly this platform earned solid Community.
@heimindanger, Keep up brother and take this platform towards heights. And hope that this platform will reach to those levels from where people will knock the door of Dtube on mass level soon.

DTube is innovation, but some of my clips are lost.
You can upload your own via IPFS and with their new update you can multi source facebook, youtube, dtube, and more which is super awesome and @heimindanger talks about it in the video
