Answer: What do you think of Trump's proposal of paying every citizen, except "high income earners" a $2,000 tariff dividend?
For context, I answered this question on Quora
This is literally rebranded helicopter money but from the treasury instead of the FED and under circumstances that aren’t even remotely similar to those used to justify it originally. He either learned nothing from the last round of CARES Act stimulus checks, shortly followed by 4 decade high record inflation, or is adopting a democrat ploy to buy votes for the upcoming midterms, but subsidizing extra demand in an economy that is not even in a forced recession (like 2020) is an even worse prospect than when it was. Even if this is just a tax credit, as suggested by Bessent, we will still pay for it on the back end through more inflationary deficit spending. As a direct transfer payment this would cost about $600 billion; the U.S. has only collected about $200 billion in tariff revenue for FY2025. The national debt has already increased $2 trillion in just 6 months. For historical context, it took the U.S. 200 years to reach $2 trillion national debt. Interest payments to finance the current debt already exceed every category of discretionary spending, including the Pentagon budget. There has never been a worse time to entertain these ideas.
