Congress’s 4,155-Page Omnibus Bill Is a Symbol of American Decadence

As Americans, we have become numb to the money-gobbling maneuvers of the bureaucratic machine. But maybe we shouldn't be.

This article is from back in January but this happens every year, regardless of administration or which political party is in power. I get the impression that those who complain about the budget every year are looked at a bit like the boy who cried wolf. As if the size of the budget doesn't REALLY matter. If only that were the case...

Unfortunately, the obscene size of the budget and deficit every year does have negative effects. The risks grow larger as the debt and deficit grow higher. In large part, government spending and the associated printing of money is responsible for our recent inflationary problems. After all, one of the definitions of inflation is an increase in the money supply. Unrestrained debt grows the money supply in an unrestrained way. This can lead to a very bad place. If you think inflation is bad now, take a look at history and the Weimar Republic. Or if you want a modern example, look at Venezuela. These things are possible here too.

Those who have grown up in the U.S. over the last nearly 100 years have known nothing but the economic and military dominance of the U.S. They don't realize things can change. I'm not so concerned with the U.S. maintaining its military superiority (other than concern for who might if the U.S. doesn't) but economic prosperity should be everyone's concern. The attack on the monetary system of the U.S. in the form of these absurd budgets threatens that more than any external entity and that threat grows by leaps and bounds every year. Government money is not "free". I don't know what the ultimate solution is but right now Democrats are willing to let Republicans spend whatever they want as long as Republicans are willing to let Democrats spend whatever they want. Despite a lot of public bickering, that's exactly what seems to happen year after year after year. It is not sustainable. It's not a matter of if this behavior will lead to disaster but when.
