I recently heard someone say that the problem lies not in leading, but in ruling. A leader guides and is interchangeable depending on what strengths are needed in any given situation. A ruler commands obedience and I'm not sure anyone should really be in that position.
Some great ponderings here, sorry I didn't find it sooner.
