PRACTICAL SUCCESS GUIDE: Benefiting from Lecture and Effective Note -Taking
It my pleasure to share this with everyone, I hope we find it helpful.
Benefiting from Lecture
The time spent during school lectures is the best time to glean and retain information. How do we make the most of this time? Read on !
Be Involved - During the lecture , try to be as actively involved as possible . Ask questions if you don't understand something , or offer your opinion on any o f the points mentioned. This will help you retain and understand material much better than if you just listen passively .
Focus - Don't be afraid to sit in the front row - it helps you avoid distraction . Needless to say your cellphone must also be safely tucked away so that you don' t get tempted to text someone (or to google the lecture material)
Plan and Prepare - Go over notes from the last class before the next lecture. If you can arrive 10 minutes before your class begin, this is the best time to scan your previous notes. it is also good to get an idea of the lecture material ahead of the lecture by getting copies of the syllabus or course outline. If possible , get previous exam papers from the same lecturer so that you know which points to focus on during class.
Eat well - Have a healthy snack before the lecture . This is a vital as numerous studies shows how relationship between a good breakfast and attention levels at school.
Tips for Effective Note-Taking
Effective note-taking is one of the most embracing way so as to improve the efficiency of a student, writing skills and also a better way of pinning points for revision towards an examination. Few tips on effective note-taking are as follows:
1 . Go to class early and prepared : Review assigned materials and previous class notes before class. if it's a completely new topic, try to get a basic idea of what it's all about beforehand - read an introductory paragraph from a textbook or encyclopedia for instance.
2 . Make your notes colorful and Interesting. Carry colored pens and highlighters with you so you can quickly emphasize the important points during the lecture . Use colored index tabs or sticky notes to neatly organize your notes.
- Write clearly
- Try Learning shorthand so that you can write quicker in class and spend more time listening.
3 . Listen for clues - To the shape or structure of the lecture to help you organize your notes, for instance: "Today we shall be looking at ...."
4 . Identify key words : For Instance , notice when words or phrases are being repeated . Underline or circle in your notes any words that seem to be really significant. Are there particular words that seems to sum up the overall message ? ( For Instance, 'oppression' or 'conflict' or 'solution' )
5 . Be an active listener -Try to connect what is being said to what you already know (this is where the preparation bit comes in handy !). Ask yourself some few questions,
- Do i agree ?
- How does it fit in with what i already knew ?
- Am i surprised ? if not, why not ?
- How did she get to that conclusion ?
6 . Put some time aside soon after the lecture to sit somewhere quiet and consider what you have just learnt - Summarize and write what you think were the main points in a few sentences. Add anything you need or want to find out more about, and any questions it raised in your mind.
7 . Follow up anything that you think really is important :Research the answers yourself, discuss it with a friend , make a list of questions to a raise if you have a seminar on the topic, ask your lecturer if you're really confused and can't find the answers elsewhere.
8 . Then file your notes away carefully - So you can find them when you need them for assignments or revision.
I hope we all find this information useful and encouraging so as to ensure we put this into use in our daily activities.
