Kids: The benefits of getting active

in #education6 years ago (edited)

Our lifestyle forces us sometimes to spend too much time sitting and we are in some cases at risk of wasting the benefits of physical activity. Children are also affected by this sort of life. Although they go to school, in some countries they spend more time sitting in the classroom than sporting due to a syllabus which gives more room to the academics subjects than the sportives ones.

We all know that for a school-age child, playtime is as important as ever for her physical development, and indoor and outdoor playing time can stimulate the growth of a child's body and brain.

Specialists affirm that children need lots of time to burn energy and work their muscles. It's the repeated movement of large and small muscle groups that builds and refines how well these parts of the body work, they say.

Something that I find terrible scary is that according to some studies, kids who watch more than two of screen time a day are more aggressive and less creative. Any sort of screen would decrease reading time and it might affect them academically.

Apart from organized lessons and team sports children would need free play, too. This helps them to develop their imagination and use their bodies according to their necessities

Sport or physical activity must be practiced as a game, individually or in a group, interacting with peers and in a habitual way. If we manage that the children are in movement, at the time that they having fun, we will benefit them enormously.

Ten benefits of children's physical activity that remind us that our children should do sports

  1. Playing with other children or adults enable kids to understand the rules of the game and experimenting. He becomes more collaborative and less individual, recognizing and respecting his peers.

  2. Children learn (sometimes little by little) to overcome shyness and expand their mechanisms of social relationship and security and self-confidence.

  3. In groups, kids learn to acquire responsibilities and cooperate.

  4. Physical activity can stop those excessive impulses of children who still can not control the excess of energy and sometimes stress.

  5. It produces an improvement and an increase of the child's motor possibilities, coordinated movements, strength ...

  6. Physical activity contributes to an adequate maturation of the muscular and skeletal system. Bones and strong muscles are paramount for proper growth.

  7. It promotes the development of healthy habits, from the practice of exercise to a healthy diet or proper body hygiene, issues to which parents should contribute with our example and teachings.

  8. Along with a balanced diet, exercise contributes to the regulation of body weight, avoiding obesity, one of the greatest evils of the childhood of our time.

  9. Exercise also improves cardiovascular functions. Therefore, it helps to prevent certain degenerative diseases such as arteriosclerosis, closely related to cardiovascular diseases.

  10. And, perhaps the most important thing for children, is that they see sport as a nice and funny activity. Free outdoor games are not like planned activities because they avoid competition and demanding performance.
